The Hempstead Republican says: "Patrons of the local post oftice who rent boxes were given a .surprise when they tendered their rental for the (luarter from Jan. 1 to April 1, learn¬ ing that the government had adopted an increased schedule of rales which <-ame out in the postal guide for De¬ cember. Those who ' had paid their rental prior to ("hristmas were immune from the increased rate but they who waited after tiiat date were taxed 10c cuts extra." '
The only instance of kicking we heard was from people who did not pay until after the first of .January. Unless we are mi.staken the Post¬ master is required to declare boxes vacant unless the rent is paid in ad¬ vance.

The (ireenport Wal(hm;iii, speaking of deer on Long Isliunl says;
Por some years we have been con¬ vinced that they art; a serious damage to farms and gardens in the area where they-survive, and the legal farce of al- liiwing lhem to bo slaughteretl on four days hy anybody who can point a gun is more than enough to ofTset any sen¬ timental plea fcr their preservation as a fanciful feature of the forest or as a "relic of antiquity". In our judg¬ ment the wild deer ought to "go" as fast as they can be marketed, and to that end the "open season" should he extended lo co, er the whole year.
Congressman Cocks has placed him¬ self on record in the House as being so full of patriotism that he wishes to see the United States flag Hying hereaf¬ ter from every Post Office in the eoun¬ try -big and little. In line with this idea, Mr. Cocks has introduced a bill authorizing the Postmaster tJeneral to take steps immediately to have flag poles erected at every ofTice in the United States, and to make arrange¬ ments also to supply Postmasters with the flags to place on them.
A regular meeting of the village Board of Trustees will be held Friday evening.

HEMPSTEAD
J. Frank Baukney, as secreliiry nf the Hemjistead Board of Heallli, at a recent meeting of the Trustees of the Village of Heinpstead, submitted his aimual rejiort with most salisfat-tnry re.sults.
Among the items of hi:-> reimrt, the fact that during the last year there were f(-wer c-ases of contagious dis¬ eases rejinrled than in any jiii-ceeding yi-ar siiic-e the ciate nf filing and le- cortling was begun, in 180'.). During the year PMl^i, the total numlier lejmrt- edw as ;'4, while in llMl.'. ihc- Intal number was 12:5.
According to Mr. Hauknt-y'.-. rtpnii, the milk sujijily t.f the village still re¬ mains firsl-(-lass, and gives evidence of good work etrected by the visit of in¬ sjiectors from the Department of Agri¬ culture in lOd.'i, when a general insjiet- tit.n cjf all dleveries was made.
The prevalent cases of contagious diseases amcmg children in the village, and their (-au.-ie, has been the subject of much sjieculation in the village re cently. Mr. Baukney suggeslefi thai unhealthy (-onditions might lu- abal(-d should a lirst-c-lass system of jihimbiiig insjiection be instituted, lb- suggi-st- ed the jiassing of an ordiiiante rt-tiuir- ing the insjioi-lioii t.f all jilumbing, old and new, by a man of comjietent abili¬ ty, who would be in a jiosition to proji¬ erly jugde the need of the village in this line.
Owing to the failure of jihysiiians and clergymen to send in their rejiorts promptly that of births and (l(-ath,s wa.s not as t-omijlt.'te as might be desired. Their attention was (-ailed in this mat¬ ter.
Thc qut-stioii of seweragi- was al.^:<i taken up exhaustively. Nassau County Review. VOL. XII FREEPORT, N. Y., FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 19a7 NO. 13 Village Comments The Hempstead Republican says: "Patrons of the local post oftice who rent boxes were given a .surprise when they tendered their rental for the (luarter from Jan. 1 to April 1, learn¬ ing that the government had adopted an increased schedule of rales which <-ame out in the postal guide for De¬ cember. Those who ' had paid their rental prior to ("hristmas were immune from the increased rate but they who waited after tiiat date were taxed 10c cuts extra." ' The only instance of kicking we heard was from people who did not pay until after the first of .January. Unless we are mi.staken the Post¬ master is required to declare boxes vacant unless the rent is paid in ad¬ vance. Did you ever travel around the streets beforo .si.\ nr half iast si.v these winter mornings wiien it was so dark you had to walk baikward In keep from running your ii'i.-' inin a leie¬ phone poll' or a Hlii(-t sign pnst'.' If JOU didn't you tnnt nppruciate the grat¬ itude of tho.so who do, to Trustee Sig¬ rnond for having the streei lights burn- iri.g all night. The (ireenport Wal(hm;iii, speaking of deer on Long Isliunl says; Por some years we have been con¬ vinced that they art; a serious damage to farms and gardens in the area where they-survive, and the legal farce of al- liiwing lhem to bo slaughteretl on four days hy anybody who can point a gun is more than enough to ofTset any sen¬ timental plea fcr their preservation as a fanciful feature of the forest or as a "relic of antiquity".
