A Merry Christmss to you all.
Superviaor Cox presents a tax rate two cents lower this year than last. He has qoito a babit of doing" this.
The windows in our local stores look fine this year. Coupled with a reason¬ able uae of newapaper apace thia should cause the merchants to be well pat¬ ronized.
The trolley company is putting out its cara repainted an olive green, a col¬ or which wont ahow dirt so quickly. It is suggested the same color might l>e an advantage on the inside, in lieu of brooms.
Village election is atill two or three months off, but already elates are be¬ ing made up, and candidates conaid¬ ered; for the office of Village Presi¬ dent, John D. Gunning, J. Huyler Elli¬ son and R. A. Mansfield Hobbs are mentioned. Archer B. Wallace has announced himself as ^ candidate for trustee and Fred Ortell is also men¬ tioned for the office.
An old proverb saya that a "green Christmas makes a fat graveyard," and as most people accept a proverb Bb if it were indisputably true it ahould be said that there is no truth whatever in this particular saying. No warrant in found for it in stetistics, ard the very fact that people whose health in below the average are advised by phy¬ sicians to seek a mild climate in win¬ ter should show others that when the Christmsa holidays are roiid and pleas¬ ant we ahould not be opprest with any unusual dread of impending death.
Let us once again make the old— probably unnecessary appeal to those wbo feast on Christmas day to remem¬ ber those who, but for the timely char¬ ity, muat fast while they feast. We shall dine more comfortably possessing in thought those sacred words, and believing in their implied promise— "inasmuch as ye have done it to the least nf these ye have done it unto me." By the way, have yuu sent tbat check or other donation to Trustee Sig¬ mond's Chrfstmas tree fund yet. Thij is your last chance.
Apropos of the aubject of communi¬ cationa we will not hereafter publiah any article reflecting unfavorably upon any object or movement unless the writer signs his name. It has been the custom io country newspapers (and city ones as well)-to run articles from "Old Subscrilier," "SicTemper,"etc., but we do not see any reason for con¬ tinuing it in the Review and so will not do it any more.' The editor of this psper takes a responsibility for all he writes, and makes enemies or loses friends on the str^ingth of his articles when he feels compelled to criticise things, and if our correspondents are nnt willing to do the same that muat be their affair—not ours. This of course does not apply to news correspondence.
How much are you interested in that new lire alarm? Are you one-of tbose whp think they are doing the lire departments favor if they Vote for this? 4Vho ia the more concerned, the firemen who muat answer the alarm anyhow or you when your hou^e or the one next door is afire, and you have to wsit ten or fifteen minutes be¬ fore the whistle starts to blow, as you are quite apt to do under tbe present "system." A sample system is in¬ stalled in Wide Awake Engine Com¬ pany bouse on Church Street and yuu will be welcomed there at any time tbe bouse is open; or First Aasistant Cbief VanRiper, who has taken great inter¬ est in this new plan of giving fire calls, we have no doubt will make an ap¬ pointment witb you at any seasonable time to explain bow it works.
We take phiaiure in publishing in this issue replies to " Willing to be In¬ formed," who assailed the Bdard of Trade in our laat issue. These articles are written by inen wbo are not aahbmed to sign tbeir names, and give their wr^tiogB some standing; aa to tbe idea of oor former correspondeat iirwritifig bla artich^ bs told oe st ths time ba bsnded It ia.
