WHY WE MAkK HEADING NOT¬ ICES "AD VEKTISEM ENT."
Some of our readers may wonder why we now mark all paid reading notieea as such where the context does not show them to be udvertieemente. We are merely following a nsw regu- latior of the governn;ent post oflice de¬ partment. Paragraph two of Section 467i of the Postal Lawa and Kegula- tions reada as fidlows :
All editorial or other reading matter published in any such newspaper, mag¬ azine or periodical fur the publication of which muney or other valuable con¬ sideration ie paid, accepted or prom¬ ised shall be plainly marked "advp'" tisement." Any editor or publisher printing editorial or other reading mat¬ ter for whicii compensation is paid, ac¬ cepted or promised without so marking the aame, ehall upon conviction in any I court having jurisdiction, be fined not less than fifty dollars (?6()) nor more than live hundred dollara ($500.) OUR POLICE JUSTICE.
As was expected, from the ramora around the village, the Village Bnard at its special meeting F'riday evening appointed Stephen P. Pettit aa Police Justice, to succeed Elvin N. Edwards, i who found it necessary to resign. The ! appointment of Mr. Pettit seems to meet with general satiafaetion, and it is predicted that he will make a good ' police otticer The term for which he was appointed is until the next Village election, when a new Justice will be elected to fill the balance of the unex¬ pired term of Mr. Edwards. It is quite probable that if Mr. Pettit gives -atisfaction in the oflice, and does not find the work too arduous, he <vill be a candidate for the oflice at the Village election.
Here is hoping that he does nnt have many days like ono Justice Edwards had recently where he sat from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. with about one hour for meals, and examined oO witnessee.
OUR POLICE COST.
The Amityville Record says: "The Police Department of Freeport is rrisin- tained for about $20,0C0 a year." 'Ihis ia tfae first idea we have had as to the cost of the Village Police Depart¬ ment for the year, and we ar i inclined to think thc figures furnished by the Recor'* are rather high. It will be impossible until the end of the year to tell wi,at the cost of our Police Depart¬ ment has been for the year, and eveii then there will be no way of knowing, unless a special report is made, the cost for installing the Police Signal System.
