The very next step in the triumph¬ ant march of civilization was Lee Toy.
Lee Toy came originally from China. For a living be washed shirts aud other things.
There was not a sign of a olond on the horizon of reform wben Lee Toy came to town. We hadn't had a shoot¬ ing or a robbery or even a domestic quarrel in montbs So Lee, who was for peace, flrst, last aud always, wel- oomed bimseif effusively when he moved in and settled down to enjoy life.
Lee built bimseif 'a wonderful little but on tbe very outskirts of the town. It consisted of oae room, divided by a red cloth curtain. In frout Loe had bis office! and did his washing. Be¬ hind the curtain he kept his bed of piuon branches and the comfdrts of his life, bis pipes aud bis cooking uteuails.
Lee bung up bis abiugle and went to work. He washed well and would stand any amount of credit, -and so he bad a guod business and thrlred.
Ue was a little bit jf a runt of a man, bent in the ahoulders; decrepit and weak, with a skiu like so muoh f archmeut aud no more fight in bim than in a dead broncho. So that all the men bad to do wben tbey wanted to have some fnn without paying for it was to go up to Lee's shanty. Theti while they pulled bis qneue and kicked and cuffed him Lee simply smiled 4nd looked happy and turned the other cheek. The same aforesaid merry makers never bore any grudge against Lee for bis UDOomplaiuing good nature and bad no false pride about them wheu tbey wanted a clean shirt on credit Lee gave them their fun aud their shirts and uever com¬ plained.

In the town lived Joe Johnson's widow. Joe lost his life up in the Superstition Mountains, and hia widow took up his claim where be left it off. She had one cbild. Little Bess. There wasn't much about Besc exoept a lot of skirts and ttnffy hair aud freckles. Sbe wasn't a pretty cbild, bnt she waa atl tbat Joe Johu- sun'a widow had and all that Lee Toy, the laundrymau, had in thia wurld to love.
And to ber Lee complained. When her mother was away in the even¬ ings Lee used to watch tbe little girl (or her and then he used to pour out his heart full of sorrows. Bess didn't understand much of wbat he said, for Lee didn't want her tu think be waa tgo unhappy, and so be always jabbere.] the worst of his sor¬ rows in Chiueiie. Bess couldn't un¬ derstand the words, but Bess had a liitle heart in ber breast, and that heart uaed toget tight and hurt wben Lee jabbered in Chiuese, nntil she couldn't help letting ont a tear or two. Then ahe would pat Lee's ugly faoe with her little hands and tell bim sho wouldn't love the men who made him unhappy.
That aettled it wilh Lee. He didn't cara what happened after that. Bess wouldn't love them! That was enongh (or bim. So he bore their taunts aud their kicks with a smile nn his face, and let them go uu with their misera¬ ble lives, because Bess didn't lore them.
Hut Lee thought he had moro phil¬ osophy thau he really had, and one day the crowd found it out. The bluws aud the taunts hurt a little bit too muoh aud Lee oame tu his senses to find that he ha.l thrown an iron at oue ol his tormentors aud vary nearly killed him.
That aettled Lee'e acconnt witb the town^of Mct'iKik.
The Vigilance comraittae sat as a grand jury aud heard Ihe prejudiced witnesses. Lee waa d.xime.1. .Kt Ilrat tbere was lyuchiux in the air aud il didn't improve the atmosphere very murk either. the face, afraid that her eyea, too, migbt condemn bim.
Without much thought of anything except to get nway aa far as pussible from McCook, Lee stumbleil alung uver the rucky hills. Finallr worn out and weary he threw himself down, not caring much whether be lived or died.
Then down in » little valley he saw a light. He knew it came frnm a miner's hut, and with one last idea uf food and Indgiui^ be made fur tha light.
He had almut reaobed it when ho heard a fearful shriek, and then tlio door of the enliin burst opeu and ont of it poured half a dozen lieuds in¬ carnate.
A moment later the cabin burst into flames.
Lee knew at once what had hap¬ pened.
Cowering behind a gri>at rock he watched the Apai'lien as they danced about the burning cabin, waving iu the air what ho gne.s.iied to be the gory scalps of their victimK.
Then from their actions Leo saw tbat the Indians intended tn descend upon tbe sleeping town from which a few houra before ho had fled,

The woman awnke Bess, who, as soon as sho saw Lee, flow to hiu arms.
"Ton have oorae back," cried the child. "I knew you would not leavo me without saying Roudliye."
