Firecracker Finds Way Into / Naif Box v\ Weathers Board of
Education President
Firemen Bill Toumbacaris and Martin Chiger Jr. of the Main
Street Fire Co. of Farmingdale put out a fire in the mail box on
Main Street caused by a firecracker having been thrown into mail
box. Although some of the mail was burned, the majority could still

First To the Beach
Vanqards Crowned
State Junior Champs
The Vanguards Drum and Bugle
Corps, sponsored by the East
Farmingdale Fire Department,
won the New York State Junior
Drum and Bugle Championship in
a competition held last Saturday
at the Weldon E. Howitt Athletic
Field. 26 groups competed in the
event.
Winning the championship entitles
the Vanguards to participate
in the Northeastern States competition
to be held in Danbury,
Connecticut in the Fall where they
will defend as last year's Northeastern
States Champions.
The Corps, whose members
range in age from ten to eighteen,
have amassed more than one-hundred
trophies since entering
competition in 1958. They are
directed by John Kopitsch.

It Was All Bicycles
A bicycle parade was held last
Thursday by the Farmingdale Youth
Council at the East Memorial
School.
Youngsters were awarded ribbons
for their original bicycle decorations,
were: ( six to seven
years ) - first : Karen Haubrich;
second: Kites Tackus; third: Bonnie
Misseder; Honorable Mention:
Matthew Jenal; ( eight to nine
years ) first: Wendy Wedmann;
Second: Mark Jenal; third: James
Price; Honorable Mention: Gary
Jekel; ten years: first: Mary Kay
McGrath; and Patricia Gregorvic:
second: Jerry Murtha; third: Ann
Rigolini; and Honorable Mention:
Ann Muratore. 210 youngsters
are registered in the Farming-dale
Youth Council program at
East Memorial.

Trustee A. Terry Weathers was elected by his
fellow Trustees as President of the District # 22
Board of Education last Tuesday night at the Annual
Reorganizational meeting. Trustee Weathers has
served on the Board five years and for two terms
as Chairman of the Board Public Relations Committee.
He succeeds Mrs. Florence DeHaan, outgoing president
who declined the nomination.

were elected. Mrs. Frank McNally
28 Ross Avenue, Huntington Station,
is the new President, Mrs.
Harold Gross, 3 Avon Court. Dix
' Hills is the new Secretary and
Mr. Anthony Uzzo, Jr., of 2 Avoa
Court, Dix Hills remains Financial
Secretary. The Board welcomed a
newly - elected Trustee, Mr.
Charles Booth, 15 Woodland Ave.,
Farmingdale.
The President of the Board,
Mrs. McNally announced an increase
of 300% in the number of
books and records borrowed for
home use. The plans for the new
year include, Senior Great Books
for Adults, Junior Great Books
for advanced fifth grade children,
more story hours and a greatly
enlarged reference and book collection.
The Library serves residents
of Central School District
# 5. ( See page 3 for Farmingdale.)
Trustee LeRoy Mollineaux was
re- elected Vice President. On the
first ballot Trustee Bernard Lang
and Trustee Molineaux received
three votes each and newly sworn
in trustee Roger Cahaney received
one. Cahaney withdrew and the final
vote was 4- 3.
Mr. Cahaney and Mr. George
Schrirowho were elected last May,
were sworn into office.
Mrs. Veronica Hansen was un-amiously
re- elected District
Clerk.
Kendrick C. Smith was un-amiously
re- appointed School District
Attorney; James D. Ryan was
reappointed Treasurer and Joseph
DeMarco was unamiously designated
as Consulting Architect.
The Observer Newspaperwas
again named as one of the official
weekly newspapers for the
publication of Legal Notices.
The Board will meet the first
and third Monday of each month
commencing in September, at 8: 30
P. M. at Weldon E. Howitt Junior
High School.
The Board Committee chairman
were named as follows: Tax Relief,
Wearners; Buildings and
Grounds, Mollineaux; Personnel,
De Haan; By Laws, Kenney; Finance
and Insurance, Schiro and
Public Relations, Cahaney.
Rockefeller Slated To Appear In Massapequa
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller
will hold a " Town Meeting" at
the Massapequa High School on
Friday, July 19th, where any citizen
or public official on any governmental
level may ask questions and
state grievances. This meeting will
be the wind up of the Governors
three day visit to Long Island.
Members of service clubs, civic
associations may attend and
discuss with the Governor about
any problem according to C. Bruce
Pearsall, Republican Leader of
Massapequa.
Fire Dept. Parade Brings Out Record Crowd on 4th of July
The Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, East Farmingdale, North Massapequa Fire
Departments polished their equipment until it shone, hosts of bands marched before
a record crowd down Main Street to the rear of the Municipal Parking Field where
Mayor Joseph Brune and a host of distinguished judges reviewed the marchers and presented
awards.
Little Bob Pell of 138 North Kings Avenue, North Massapequa trys to play the horn
like his dad in the North Massaj) equa Fire Department Band, The two- year old tyke
didn't bring out much of a sound from the horn, but he tried and tried.
Resting tired feet at the close of July 4th parade in Farmingdale were: members
of the Massapequa Fire Department Band, Firemen Sal Recca of 114 Motor Avenue,
South Farmingdale and Stevphen Composto of 117 Daniel Road, North Massapequa,
while Majorette Kathleen W. Larsen of 51 William Road, North Massapequa consoles.
