Students Split Ticket; Elect Hynes

of the electorate this year and it
was no different at Weldon E.
Howltt Junior High School last
week when students elected Douglas
Hynes their student council
president with the use of real
voting machines.
Hynes, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Hynes, 60 Bethpage Rd.,
Farmingdale, was the nominee of
the Columbia Party. The Vice
Presidential candidate however,
of the Constitution Party, George
Pitarra, son of Mr. and Mrs.
George Pitarra, 48 Jerome Drive,
was elected.
Wallace Damon, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wallace Damon, 55 Hillside
Rd., was the Columbia Party's
successful candidate for treasurer.
But the Constitution Party
came through with Kathy Young
as sectetary. She is the daughter
of Mr. and Mes. Leroy N. Young,
28 Merokee Place.
Earlier the candidates had been
nominated at party conventions.
Homeroomswere assigned topar-ties.
Students attended as delegates
with their homeroom delegations.
After hearing the
speeches they returned to caucus.
Much of the process involved
the learning of a political vocabulary.
CI asses in other subjects also
utilized the activity. English
classes had students learn and
spell political words. A reading
class had students conduct polls
and then go to the polls to get
across the concept that a word
can have two meanings.

District Office.

Another English class had the
two candidates for president give
their talks. The students took
notes as if they were reporters.
Then they wrote compositions
telling who they supported
and giving their reasons.
The new president has been
active in school and Farmingdale
youth affairs. He is a member of
the National Junior Honor Society
at his school and a member of
the Order of the Arrow, an honorary
group in the Boy Scouts. He
was a patrol leader in Troop
606 at Main Street School. He
has also been active in helping
to raise funds and work for The
Association for Help of Retarded
Children. He has also served
as a Farmingdale Youth Counselor.

Two candidates announced their intention of seeking
election for the post of Fire Commissioner
of the Farmingdale Fire District this week. John
R. Ray, of 29 Oakwood Avenue, South Farming-dale,
Chairman of the Board, is seeking reelection
to a five year term and Edward L.
Braune of 335 Linden Street, Massapequa Park.
The announcement that Ray was
seeking re- election quoted him as
having six years of solid accomplishment
in the Farming-dale
Fire District during which
time he has demonstrated sincere
concern for die community and
dedicated himself to providing
the district with an efficient, progressive
and effective and protection
service."
The Ray announcement stated
that " since 1958, when he first
became a Commissioner, he
fought to have the district acquire
its own fire department
for the purposes of expediting
so- vices to the residents of the
district who were being serviced
by the village. Realizing that
recious time V.- CJ beiija; con-was
elected to serve two terms
as President of the Nassau
County Association of Fire Districts.
While President of that
association Braune worked with
state, county and local officials
to obtain higher death
benefits for all the firemen in
New York State."
John L. Ray was raised and
educated in Farmingdale where
he resides with his wife and
three children. He served in the
armed forces during World War
II and participated in overseas
duties.
Braune is a member of the
Society of Professional Investigators,
and the Veteran Corps
of Artillery State of New York
