The Incorporated Village of Farmingdale released
this week a survey of apartment houses and their
impact on the village and the school district.
The survey shows that there are 37 garden apartments
with 560 units and two standard type apartment
dwellings with 132 units. According to the
survey, the major findings dispute many notions
frequently associated with apartments and apartment
dwellers. For example, most of the tenants
are not former New York City dwellers, but are
newly married couples, from this area, or older
people who no longer wish to live in suburban
houses.
The number of public school children residing
in apartments in the village was 14 per 100 units.
This compares to 200 children per 100 private
residences. As of September 1964 there were 113
school children from a total of 692 dwelling units.
The survey also showed that construction of
apartments tend to greatly add to the assessed
valuations of the village and school district. The
increase in village population, as a result of apartments,
also resulted in increased income to the
village due to per capita state aid.
The survey pointed out that all apartments provide
adequate on- site parking, with the exception
of one pre- war building.
One significant factor showed that apartment
houses in school district # 22 contribute more to
the school tax base than they burden it.
The report was prepared by Trustee Norman
Krasnow with the cooperation of Village Clerk,
James J, McKenna, former Village Clerk, William
A. Wesche and Geoffrey L. Maddocks, Acting Administrative
Assistant of School District # 22.
Their findings indicate that the increase in
assessed valuation developed by apartments r e duced
the real property taxes. Also the recently
enacted utility tax should show a substantial increase
in income due to the increase in population.
Mr. Bernard Hulkower, President of the Friends of the Bethpage Public Library,
hands prize winning certificate to Mrs. E. Anderson ( center) for first
prize in representational water color and Mrs. L. Schneider ( right) for i f i r s ti
prize in abstract water color.
Over 100 paintings and many pieces of sculpture were exhibited at the Beth-page
Public Library during National Library Week. The entries came primarily
from the Bethpage- Plainview- Farmingdale area. The other winners were: A . S .
Annibell - best in show; Allen Williams - first prize in sculpture; E. Ambrose
- 1st prize Abstract O i l : Donna Frost - 1st prize Representational O i l .
" The advantages of an adequate
supply of arartment units
are not merely shown by the results
of the survey. For example,
persons, who for one reason or
another no longer wish to remain
in a single family house,
may have difficulty in finding
an apartment in the community.
These may include business and
civic leaders, and, as a result,
they move to another area, which
is not desirable from their standpoint
and the community loses
their services. Countywise, 24%
of all apartment residents moved
from a single family home within
the same or adjoinging community."
•• Since the supply of apartments
is currently inadequate,
consideration should be given
to multiple dwelling locations
adjacent to deteriorating commercial
and residential areas.
The creation of a new supply
of consumers who live within
walking distance of the retail
store area would, of course,
stimulate the retail area and
possibly lead to its upgrading."
Quoting from the Nassau County
Planning Commission report
" Farmingdale has the best relationship
between cars, spaces
and units. However it is difficult
to explain the relatively low
ownership of cars in an area that
