VAMPS STRESS PREVENTION
Shapiro Cleared
Of Charges
Sidney Shapiro, Farmingdale jeweler at 279 Main Street, Farmingdale,
has been cleared of all charges of criminally receiving
and concealing stolen property. The finding was made by County
Court Judge, Paul Kelly, in his order made pursuant to a motion
brought by Jules Schwabinger, local attorney who represented
Shapiro, to dismiss the Grand Jury's indictment. The Court stated
that it was his " firm conclusion that the evidence presented unexplained
and uncontradicted, would be insufficient to establish the
guilty knowledge of the defendant as would be required to make out
a prima facie case upon the t r i a l ."
The case originally arose when Mr. Shapiro unknowingly purchased
jewelry from a customer which later turned out to be stolen.
Jewish Center
Building Program
Gets Go Ahead
At a special meetingt held
recently, the Board of Trustees
of the Farmingdale Jewish Center
approved a recommendation
made by the Building Committee
which will lead to the construction
of a new Center.
Jack Zeldin, Chairman of the
Building Committee, reported to
the Board that the committees'
recommendation was to have the
Architects, Scheiner and Switt
of Massapequa Park, proceed
with construction drawing and
specifications. With the Boards
approval of this recommendation,
it is expected that actual excavation
could begin by March 1.
" With such a timetable", it may
be possible to have the building
shell completed by the High Holy
Days in September 1966," Zeldin
said.
The new building, an addition
to the facilities now in use, will
be located on the present site
of Prospect, Cobb and Fulton
Streets.
Sidney Shapiro, ( left) a jeweler, located at 279 Main Street,
Farmingdale, is congratulated by his attorney Jules Schwabinger
after he was cleared of charges of receiving stolen property. His
wife, Jacqueline, ( r) was on hand to receive the good news.
Watch For A
Big Announcement
in next week's
OBSERVER
* Dig We Must for a better Farmingdale' could very well be the slogan
the last few weeks. This is the way Conklln Street looked this past week
just before reaching Merritt Road. The State road is being widened to include
another north lane between the juncture of Route 109 and Merritt
Road. The State will then black top the road from Route 109 to the Farmingdale
Village line, about 500 feet from the underpass of the LIRR. The
Incorporated Village of Farmingdale is also constructing water mains
near the railroad tracks, just east of Main St. ( p » . otoby ciuire studio*)
The South Farmingdale Fire Department will
observe National Fire Prevention Week, October
3 through October 9, by inviting all district
residents to a special " F i r e Proof Family Night"
and open house at the fire headquarters on Friday
evening, October 8, at 7: 30 P. M. The Farming-dale
Fire Department is celebrating National Fire
Prevention week also. ( See article below).
The open house is only one of several activities
planned for the week. The firemen will also
visit local schools to promote " The Fire Proof
Family".
Upon announcing the special open house, Chief
Richard Klein has said, " The best way to prevent
any fire is to be alert. To be a " Fire Proof
Family*' good housekeeping is a must and these
basic steps should be observed if fire strikes
your home:
Have a plan - Each family should know the
full threat of fire. They should draw a floor
plan, discuss escape routes and have fire drills.
Fire department - Make sure everybody in
the family knows the number and how to. call
the fire department. Firemen not only put out
fires, they can save a life.
Bedroom doors - Everybody should sleep with
bedroom doors closed. This will keep smoke
and flame out long enough to permit escape.
Feel door for heat - If awakened at night by
fire or smoke, feel the top of the door. If hot,
DON'T OPEN, escape by window. If not, brace
bottom of door with foot, open slightly; if smoke
gushes in, close the door and use window.
Escape through window - Each family should
make sure that at least one window in each
room is big enough to get through and that it
can be opened. If window is on second floor
or higher, use window to roof or porch or install
a rope or metal ladder.
Ladder - Keep a ladder handy outside and
make sure everybody ( including the neighbors)
will know where it is kept. Practice getting
ladder into place and using it.
Meeting - Every family should set up a prearranged
meeting place to which everyone goes
- after escape to make sure no one is overlooked.
