Not much was left of a North Massapequa
home this week when an explosion virtually destroyed
the home. The explosion occured about
3 p. m.; on Saturday in the home of William
Cornell of 195 North Suffolk Avenue, North Massapequa.
Cornell was alone in the house and
was rescued by neighbors and rushed to Meadow-brook
Hospital where he was reported treated
for severe burns.
The explosion was allegedly caused by a gas
leak.
The explosion blew out one side of the house
and the roof caved in. Minutes later fires broke
out and rose to a height of 50 feet. Before the
fire erupted, neighbors rushed in and rescued
Cornell. One of the first on the scene, Richard
Stanley, said that Cornell was kneeling in the
debris with the house caved in around him.
Cornell's wife, a waitress at the Midwell Diner,
North Massapequa was at work at the time
and their daughter, Donna, age eight, was visiting
a neighbor.

and Massapequa fire districts responded.
