SECOND DALER KILLED
VIETNAM ACTION Marine Private First Class Donald J. Miller, age 19, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Capano of. 31 Spencer Street, West
Farmingdale, was killed in action at 5 p. m. on Tuesday afternoon
of this week in Vietnam.
He was stationed on a hill in a demilitarized zone for the
past 50 days and last week was moved to a new location about
25 miles north of Da Nang.
On Monday, his parents received a letter from Miller with a
Thanksgiving Day menu enclosed.
In his recent letter he told his parents that he was being assigned
to Operation Mississippi. The letter before this, wished
them all a very Happy Thanksgiving and sent a pen and ink sketch
which he drew of what home looked like and a picture of a
Corvette car which he hoped he would own when he returned
from his tour of duty.
Miller entered the Marines in April, 1963 and received boot
training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was assigned to
Yorktown, Virginia for one year before being sent to Vietnam
in September 1966. At the time of his death, he was in Company
' G't Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division.
After two years at Farmingdale High School, the Vietnam
hero took a course at a barbering school in Babylon.
He is survived by his parents and two brothers, Robert, age
26 and James, age 16.
Student Fatality Results In
Demonstration For Safety
Several hundred students at the Farmingdale
Agricultural and Technical college staged a student
government demonstration along Melville Road at
the college entrance on Wednesday evening of this
week. The students lined Melville Road carrying
flares and held a moment of silence in memory of
fellow student Tom Howelles, 18, who was fatally
injured at 11: 30 p. m. one day last week while he
was walking toward the college with another
student, Marie Spadaforo, 18, who was critically
injured and hospitalized at Mid Island.
According to Al Blumenfeld, Vice President of
the Student Senate at the college, the student
demonstration was organized to point up the
need for a crosswalk on Melville Road and or a
stop light to reduce the speed of traffic at the
college entrance. Blumenfeld stated that the recent
tragedy was the sixth student fatality in
that area in the past three years.

The Farmingdale V illage Board
met on Monday with the attorney
for the Masonic Lodge who are
seeking a zoning change at 807
Fulton Street for the purpose of
building a new lodge building.
After reviewing the- plot plan,
the Village Board stated that
parking provisions were not sufficient
and suggested that the
Lodge provide more parking facilities.
The Board also approved a
public hearing date on the application
of Oakdale Development
Corporation to rezone the Sullivan
- Nielsen property on the
southside of Conklin Street, east
of Secatogue Avenue, for the
purpose of rezoning and the installation
of a 54 unit apartment
house building.
The Board did not set a specific
date for the public hearing,
but a village spokesman said that
a hearing date would be set sometime
after January 1.
In other village business the
Board approved activating a
smaller siren for fire emergency
purposes in the Ridge Road area.
The Village Board had deactivated
a stronger fire siren on
Ridge Road because of a neighbor's
complaint of the loud noise
it created. Since the deactivation,
firemen living in that area
claimed that they did not hear
the fire calls and could not respond
to the fires. They further
claimed that they needed a required
number of fire calls in
order to retain their status as
volunteer firemen.
