FARMINGDALE ADOPTS
680 MEN IN VIETNAM 32 Farmingdale residents were present Monday night at the
Junior League of the Farmingdale Women's Club - sponsored
Community Night to see what can be done for the servicemen in
Vietnam.
Organizations who sent representatives were: the Rotary Club,
Lions, Kiwanis, Nassau County Extension, Columbiettes,
Knights of Columbus, Farmingdale Women's Club, Viceroy
Civics Association, Sisterhood of the Farmingdale Jewish Centre,
Centre Island Chapter of Hadassah, the Women's Society of
Christian Service uf the Farmingdale Methodist Church, Alpha
and Omega Circle of Kings Daughters, the Main Street PTA, The
Farmingdale Observer and the Farmingdale- Bethpage Historical
Society.
After considerable discussion, the group went on record to
officially adopt 680 men in the 4thBattalion, 9th Infantry Manchu,
25th Infantry Division of the United States Army, who are stationed
in Binhcharch district of GiaDinh Province, southwest of
Saigon. The unit consists of four companies of 170 men each.
The Commanding Officer is Robert Hyatt, who had written that
the unit wished for ' adoption'. The Farmingdale group went on
record that they were not only adopting the servicemen, but are
including their project " Operation Helping Hand", which means
help to the Vietnamese with which the servicemen come in contact.
Frank Hynes, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman and a Farmingdale
resident, addressed the group about his plans to introduce
the next day a resolution to the Oyster Bay Town Board to
acquire the 14 a c r e plot on Motor Avenue and Heiser Lane, South
Farmingdale for recreational purposes and to set aside a portion
of the property as a living memorial for the Farmingdale
servicemen in Vietnam. He said that he would like community
assistance, if the community favored the idea for the purchase
of a memorial stone on which the names of the late Scotty Morgan
and Donald Miller would be inscribed, as well as other servicemen,,
He ai£. u went on record that tne oyster Bay Town Board
would lend all assistance within their power to whatever plan was
decided upon by the Junior League and the community r e p r e sentatives
present that night.
Farmingdale Village Trustee, John T. Hallahan, who appeared
as the representative of Congressman James R. Grover,
gave details as a result of some research that he had done on
sending packages to Vietnam and the. names of heads of the
Defense Department whom he had contacted.
Mrs. Pat Finger, President of the Junior League of The
Farmingdale Women's Club turned the presentation of facts
gathered over to JuanitaHale, Chairman of the Vietnam servicemen
committee. She in turn introduced committee members who
spoke on a different phase of their extensive research. Those
who spoke were Phyllis Hosteder, Lynn Bagli, Joyce Gilmore.
Twenty- seven Farmingdale families made recordings to
service men on Wednesday night which were mailed the next
day to the men in Viet- Nam. Pictured during the recording
