SEND FIRST SHIPMENT
TO ADOPTED IN VIET NAM
Eighty pounds of baby's and children's clothing were mailed
on Tuesday by the Steering Committee for the Farmingdale
Vietnam adoption in response to an urgent request from
the commanding officer of the 4th Brigade, 9th Infantry Division
which the group adopted last week.
The commanding officer wrote that as a result of 13 Vietnamese
soldiers being wiped out from the explosion of a mine,
16 children were left destitute and in dire need of clothing.
Members of the Steering Committee who acted promptly
to this first mailing included David fiysmann of the Farming-dale
Kiwanis Club; Mrs. Caroline Klesh, Farmingdale Observer,
Owen Schell, Farmingdale Lions Club; Mrs. William McGee,
Methodist Women's Society; Alton Lamphiere, Viceroy Civic
Association and Mrs. Jacob Hostetter, Mrs. George Hale,
Mrs. James Gilmore, and Mrs. Francis Bagli of Junior League
of the Farmingdale Women's Club.
Mrs. Hale quickly collected the summer children's garments;
packed them in boxes, then repacked them when she discovered
that any package under five pounds could be mailed for $ 1.34
while the rate went to $ 4.08 for any package five pounds or over.
In all she mailed 17 packages.
According to Lt. Robert A. Hyatt, the commanding officer, the
Farmingdale adopted service men conduct action programs
in conjunction with their operations. They include help in
education, health and sanitation, the building of dispensaries,
schools and playgrounds and in a ' myriad of other fields
which are pursaed to win back the population by improving
their numerous misfortunes. We are always in need of commodities
to support this program such as toys, school supplies,
soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and children's summer
clothing". He ends, " The winning over of these people is so
critical to the winning of this war".
Tlie next meeting of the Steering Committee is Monday,
January 9.

• Operation Helping Hand' is being conducted daily by the 4th Battalion
9th Infantry Manchu Division, the unit in Viet Nam, which the Farmingdale
group adopted last week. A doctor from the unit goes into ' not always
safe areas' to treat the sick, another effort to win the hearts and minds
of the people, according to Commanding Officer Robert Hyath. He closed
by saying, " We are honored to be adopted by the citizens of Farmingdale."
