WEATHERS CHOSEN FOR
MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD A. Terry Weathers, of 315 Staples Street, Farmingdale, was named
Man- of- the- Year last Sunday at the annual Brotherhood ceremonies
held at Farmingdale Senior High School.
In making the presentation, school superintendent Dr. William
Kinzler, cited Weathers as a ' fighter and hard worker who has spent
countless hours with no pay in the field of education'.
Born and raised in Kentucky, Weather moved here about 25 years
ago and has been active in PTA, Little League, Youth Council, Boys
Scouts and Methodist Church activities. For the past 12 years he has
served on the District 22 Board of Education and was the first
president of the Nassau- Suffolk School Boards Association.
Weathers is presently the vice president of the New York State School
Boards Association.
In 1968 he was awarded the Hofstra University Education Award.
A communications consultant with the New York Telephone
Company, Weathers and his wife Elsie have five children, Terry,
Joyce, Robert, George and Edward. The Weathers also have four
grandchildren.
Previous award winners were Weldon E. Howitt, Lew Minn, Jack
Goor, Rev. Father Jeremiah O. S. B., Dr. Albert Meyerstein, Alex
Mayerhofer, Mrs. Edith Seaman, and Dr. Ellery Follet.
The program was sponsored by the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions
Clubs.
College Council Approves ' Self Governing Visitation'
The College Council of the State
University at Farmingdale,
during its monthly meeting last
Saturday approved a report on
" Self Governing Residence Hall
Visitation" submitted by the
study commission of Student,
Administration and Board
members appointed at the
January session.
The meeting with the Council
was described as businesslike
and harmonious, and a marked
difference from the demonstration
and sitr ins that broke out
on the campus more than a
fortnight ago as militant students
tried to force acceptance of a
visitation plan. Then, Dr. Charles
W. Laffin, Jr., President of the
College, warned the students that
there could be no discussion of
their demands as long as there
was disorder on the campus. The
uprising was quelled and a study
committee made up of members
of the Council, Administration
and student spokesmen held
several meetings.
The final proposal worked out
by the committee was presented
to the board by Alvin Nowicki,
President of IDC. With a few
minor changes it was approved.
It now requires each of 24 dormitory
wings to determine by
vote of its students whether or not
they will accept the visitation
policy. Those accepting will then
select from a series of visiting
hours in the recommendations
which ones they want.
The visiting hours open for
selection are: Monday through
Thursday, 6: 00 to 11: 30 p. m.,
Friday, 6: 00 p. m. to 12: 30 a. m.
Saturday; Saturday. 1: 00 p. m. to
1 a. m. Sunday, and Sunday, 11: 00
a. m. to 11: 00 p. m. Regulations for
carrying out the visitations were
also accepted. A visitor will be
required to sign in upon entering
and leaving, in a book provided
for the purpose in each dorm. The
regulations also provide for the
establishment of a Judicial Board
made up of resident students to
review infringements of rules
and standards and to determine
the penalties.

Senior Citizen Housing
Receives O K
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John W. Burke announced
this week that the Town has received federal
approval and funding for its Senior Citizens housing
project in Bethpage.
Burke said the Town received a telegram from the
federal Department of Housing and Urban Development
authorizing $ 832,002 in financial assistance funds
for 37 Senior Citizens housing units on Burkhardt
Avenue near Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. The project
will be developed under the turnkey method whereby a
private builder will construct the units and then turn
them over to the Town Housing Authority to run.
" We hope to get things under way here in the near
future," said Burke. " We met with the Housing
Authority the other day and they told us that we should
have these badly needed units ready in about a year."
Housing Authority Chairman Frank J. Swit said the
next step in the consideration of these three sites would
be the further development of architects' sketches and
renderings and the approval by HUD of financial
assistance funds as in the Bethpage case. Final action
in all four cases will take place only after public
hearings, said Swit.
Burke said the Town has received about 700 inquiries
about the Senior Citizens housing program. " We have
sent applications to all those who asked lor them" he
said. He noted that not all applicants would qualify
under the program. " Some are not currently Town
residents," he said, " some may have too much income,
others may not meet the age or other requirements."
