VOTERS OK SCHOOL
BUT NIX LIBRARY BUDGET Given a second try, School District 22 voters passed a $ 21,614,981
budget last Saturday by a narrow 1,752 to 1,589 margin but the library
budget was again defeated, this time by a 1,403- 1933 count.
In a vote earlier this month when almost twice as many voters went
to the polls the school budget went down 3,466 to 2,505, while the
library appropriation was nixed 3,248 to 2,693.
A proposition to provide busing for grades 7 through 12 for only one
mile walking distance at additional cost of $ 145,744 was soundly
trounced 2,057 to 1,282. The present policy of one and one half miles
will be retained.
The school tax rate in the Town of OysterBay will be $ 11.91 while in
the Babylon Town sector the figure is estimated at $ 18.53.
Move To Replace Gorton On Library Board Stymied
Efforts of the Farmingdale Library Board which met at a special
meeting on Monday with the hope of naming a successor to controversial
board member Carl E. Gorton failedAThe board acted on
the premise _ x Gorton had moved his family to Merritt Island
Florida and was no longer a resident of the distri ; t.
The three current liberal library trustees were thwarted by a court
order to appoint a successor just before losing their board majority at
the July 7 meeting when a temporary court injunction instituted by
trustee Warren Altmann was upheld by the court. Altmann, who
usually votes the some way as Gorton on library matters, contended
that Gorton had not submitted his resignation or announced his non-residence.
Also that Gorton has had no reason to believe that his presence at a
board meeting would be required • . at any time before the
regularly scheduled meeting of Tuesday, July 7 at which time the
board will elect officers.
With defeated incumbent Dr. Albert Meyerstein to be replaced by
JosephCrocco# Altmann and Gorton look for a 3- 2 edge over trustees
Robert Callahan and Irwin Jacovsky.
After the library board had hired an investigator and sent a
telegram to Florida, Gorton replied that he is not missing but that he
moved his family there for their " health and safety' - and that he is
maintaining a residence in Farmingdale. The place of residence in
Farmingdale remains a mystery.
Gorton, a former John Birch Society member had recently
asked for a board discussion on the ouster of library director Orrin
B. Dow and his assistant Mrs. Hortensia Stoyan.
At the July 7 meeting, retiring president Robert Callahan sees a 2- 2
deadlock because Gorton could not vote on his own qualifications,
because of his self- interest in the outcome. In the event of a deadlock
Callahan said the issue would probably wind up in court or in Albany
before the state commissioner of education.
At Monday's meeting Altmann declined to vote on the payment of
$ 187.50 for the investigating firm because he had not seen the report.
When asked by a taxpayer what the board expects to do about the
defeated library budget, Callahan said that library director Orrin B.
Dow will have some suggestions and recommendations at next
Tuesday's meeting after his return from Detroit where he is
, receiving an award.
