TOWN MAKES MOVE
ON PARK DEVELOPMENT
The Oyster Bay Town Board took a major step forward toward the
creation of a 16 acre Town park at Heisser Lane Farmingdale, when it
unanimously voted to accept the design phase for the park at
Tuesday's public hearing.
Town Supervisor John W. Burke said ths Town will now enter into
agreement with the consultants on the project, the firm of Kahler,
t'ynchoR, Colosano and Petrides, thai win enable the consultants to"
prepare bid specifications to premit the Town to advertise for bids on
some major aspects of the project.
Burke said the first bids, which will include general site work,
fencing, outdoor facilities such as handball and tennis courts, softball
and football fields as well as underground services, will be returnable
and opened by September 16.
Burke added that the Board believes it is essential and in the public
interest to proceed with this project at this time because of the
spiraling cost of construction.
Town officials met three weeks ago with about 1,000 Farmingdale
residents in a quickly called meeting at Farmingdale Senior High
School, in an effort to dispel rumors that the site would be turned into
a low income housing project.
Rumors swelled with the news that a sign nlaced on the site in 1967
when Vke site was purchased had been i amoved. Town oificiais
claimed that the sign was removed because several of the elected
officials who were on the sign were no longer in office or had passed
away.
The site was acquired for $ 850,000 and it is estimated that an additional
$ 1,800,000 will be needed for development. Two sets of
petitions numbering 7,000 called for immediate park development.
Efforts are being made to have the site named after former Farmingdale
Republican leader, the late Ellsworth Allen.
Republic Settles Three Year Pact With Workers
Fairchild Hiller's Republic
Aviation Division and the International
Association of
Machinists and Aerospace
Workers this week settled upon a
new three- year contract
agreement, extending to July 15,
1973.
The contract proposal, which
had been under negotiations
since mid- May, was approved by
vote of the members of Republic
Lodge 1987.
The agreement provides for a
wage package of 28 cents over the
three year period -- 12 cents an
hour the first year and eight cents
an hour the second and third
years. In addition, a feature of
the agreement provides for a
prepayment cost of living adjustment
for which the company
receives credit on the Bureau of
Labor Statistics Index. This
amounts to an additional three
cents an hour per year for the
second year and three cents an
hour in the third year, for a total
of six cents.
In the area of pensions, the plan
agreed upon will provide union
members with $ 6.00 per month
per year for both past and future
service during the term of the
agreement. Previously, this had
been $ 4.50 per month.
An additional feature of the
contract is a longevity pay plan to
, give i recognition to employees
with 25 years or more of service.
Among the improvements in
the group insurance benefit plan
was the addition of major
medical coverage up to a
maximum of $ 15,000. The
previous maximum was 45,000.
This coverage includes a coinsurance
feature, whereby the
company pays 80 per cent and 20
per cent is assumed by the employee.
Insurance will be $ 100
deductible.
In the area of job inequities,
certain skilled job classifications
were upgraded.
Also in the agreement was the
provision of one additional paid
holiday, Good Friday. This
makes a total of ten paid holidays
per year for the duration of the
three- year period of the
agreement.
Commenting on the agreement,
Donald J. Strait, Fairchild Hiller
vice president and general
manager of the Republic
Aviation division said:
" I'm pleased that our
negotiations have resulted in an
agreement acceptable to both
union and management and one
which will allow us to move
ahead without delay on some of
the challenging tasks before us.
" We have several important
programs before us, the most
immediate of which is the
supersonic transport, for which
we are a major subcontractor to
the Boeing Company. Our work
on the SST is vital to this division
and to the Long Island economy.
" In the prototype stage," Strait
said, " this program will mean
approximately $ 34 million dollars
to Fairchild Hiller and, in the
production phase, it will mean
about $ 2.5 billion dollars and
employment for 6,500 empolyees
on Long Island.
" That the employees of
Republic Lodge 1987 of the IAM
average nearly 21 years of service
is indicative of the pool of
experienced and skilled workers
in our organization. This experience
and skill, applied to the
programs in our future, gives us
hope for the future of Republic on
Long Island.
An outboard triple slotted flap for the Boeing 747 is shown being loaded into a shipping fixture at
Fairchild Hiller's Republic Aviation Division. The Republic division and the corporation s Aircraft
Division at Hagerstown, Md. are building the 747' s wing control surfaces under a $ 175,000,000 contract
for 201 ship sets. Ninety sets have been completed thus far and work on the program is expected
to continue into the 1970s. The outboard triple slotted flap is thirty- feet long and approximately six-and-
one- half feet high, and weighs 1,620 pounds. Its length is about the same size of a light aircraft s
entire wing span.
