TOWN STUDIES BIDS
FOR PARK PROJECT
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John W. Burke announced today that
the Town is studying bids by six firms for the proposed Heisser Lane
Park facility to be located in Farmingdale.
Burke said the bids were opened on September 16 and that after
careful study, by the Commissioner of Public Works and the Town
Engineer, the Board hoped to approve the awarding of a contract no
later than October 6th.
Four of the six firms submitting bids came in under the $ 800,000
estimate of the consulting engineer. Low bidder among the six is Ace-
Hoeffner of 359 Bayview Avenue, Amityville. Ace- Hoeffner indicated
it would charge $ 733,033 and guaranteed completion of the work
within 300 days.
The initial contract will include general sitework, outdoor facilities
such as tennis and handball courts, football fields and softball fields,
and fencing.
The other bidders are Lizza Industries of Roslyn ($ 749,999); Lizza &
Son of Oyster Bay ($ 947,000); Leistner of Plainview ($ 747,910); J. D.
Posillico of Farmingdale ($ 927,000); and Joseph Zanghi & Son of
Farmingdale ($ 748,000).
Burke Hopeful State Will Aid In Drug Fight
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
John W. Burke said that he interpreted
Governor Rockefeller's
visit to Nassau County last week
as a major step toward providing
State funds to the Town to fight
the problem of narcotics and
drug addiction on a local level.
" State funds earmarked for the
fight against narcotics have not
filtered down to the local community,"
Burke said. " State law,
which dictates that a
municipality must oversee the
use of funds which the State
provides to community groups
fighting narcotics, has proved to
be a hurdle rather than a stepping
stone. Rockefeller has
allocated $ 65 million for local
guidance councils in its budget.
" If a Town does not step in. as
Oyster Bay has done with the
recently established Youth
Bureau, local groups have no
legal way of obtaining financial
aid needed to accomplish their
goals."
Burke said the State law might
work fine for a Town of 10,000
which could operate with only one
narcotics council. " But in Oyster
Bay," he said, " we could end up
with 11 such councils and the
State presently expects the Town
to absorb all administrative
costs, rentals and the assorted
other costs of running a local
council."
Burke said that recent
meetings between Town and
State officials, plus Rockefeller's
