KING SIDE SEATS: Three Farmingdale youths are silhouetted
against the glow of flames as they use the roof of a cabin cruiser as a
vantage point to watch the firemen in action. Farmingdale, South
Farmingdale and East Farmingdale Fire Departments responded at
1: 20 a. m. Friday to the blaze that gutted the vacant McReynold's
home on Main Street. The fire of undetermined origin started in the
basement and rapidly spread up the stairways to the roof. The local
volunteers were on the scene for over five hours.

Over 200 At Dad's Planning Session
Over two hundred people attended
the Farmingdale High
School Dads' Club meeting last
Monday at the Hawks hall.
Concerned parents, Supt. of
Schools Dr. William Kinder and
school board President Robert
Weiss were joined by a large
contingent of students to hear a
progress report on the committee's
efforts to raise an
estimated 160,000 to finance the
sports and extra - curricular
activities that have been cut by
the austerity budget.
Chairman Dave Williams
opened the meeting by outlining
the proposed fund- raising activities,
with reports from the
various activity chairmen.
The industrial committee,
headed by Ed Schlosser and Tony
Detroia, has been approaching
local merchants and industries
for donations and, so far, the
response has been good. Ed
Schlosser estimated that five to
six thousand dollars might be
raised by his committee.
Donations for the Country
Auction, to be held on August 9 at
the Howitt athletic field, were
stacked at the rear of the hall.
Auction chairwoman Joan
LaFontaine noted that the initial
donations had been solicited
mostly by word of mouth, but
expressed the hope that
everybody would find something
to put on the block, except
clothing, and bring it to the
Hawks hall, 422 Conklin St., any
Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday from 7 to 10 p. m. Help
with larger items can be obtained
by calling 420- 0248. The items
already collected range from
papier mache Mardi Gras heads
to exercise machines, bicycles,
jewelry and appliances. Local
merchants are also donating
goods and services for the auction.
Once again, the possibility of a
rock festival was raised and
Dads' Club president Jim Keats
said the matter was being investigated,
with a target date for
the concert to be sometime after
the beginning of the school year.
The most immediate fund-raising
activity is the Door - to •
Door Campaign on August 2.
Chairman Dave Williams asked
that residents give generously
when the student representatives
call. Bumper stickers with the
fund drive's slogan, " Keep
Farmingdale # 1," will be given in
exchange for donations of two or
more dollars.
In other business, Asst. Supt. of
Schools Dr. Phillip Acinapuro
brought the committee up to date
on the latest legislative moves in
Albany to bring an estimated
half- million dollars in additional
school aid to District 22. The aid
is part of a bill which would
require the MTA to pay for the
facilities at Republic Aircraft.
Dr. Acinapuro noted that the bill
has a good chance of passage if
enough residents of the school
district write letters to Gov. Hugh
Carey urging him to sign it. Form
letters to this end will be printed

Asks Public
Write Carey
In a personal letter this week to
district organizations and
community leaders, the Farmingdale
Board of Education
asked the public as individuals
and organizations to wire or write
Governor Hugh Carey urging him
to sing the MTA Bill into law.
The bill, S5262- A will provide
payments in lieu of taxes on the
now exempt land at Republic
Airport, which was taken over by
the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority ( MTA) in 1869. It could
give Farmingdale School District
up to $ 500,000 this year and save a
loss of another $ 450,000 next year.
" It is absolutely essential that
Governor Carey be deluged with
letters and telegrams in regard to
the need for his signature on this
bill," the board said. " This is an
equitable solution to a special
situation
In its letter, the board urged
the public to point out to the
governor that Farmingdale
residents are subsidizing the
growth of the airport by hundreds
of thousands of dollars each year
... the airport is for the benefit of
all the people in the state, not just
local residents ... no growth
