Village Holds Line On Budget
Keeps Rate At $ 2.82
BICENTENNIAL EMBLEM winners show their designs to the judges of the Farmingdale contest,
sponsored by the Farmingdale Bicentennial Commission. The emblems will be used by the local
commission on letterheads, posters, etc., during the celebration of 200th birthday of the United States.

Contest Leader List Growing
The number of frontrunners is
beginning to grow as the Master
and Miss Hardscrabble Contest
begins its fourth week with a total
of 33 contestants in the eight to
twelve year old age bracket.
Leading the boys for the
Master Hardscrabble title is
Robert Meagher with 590 votes,
followed by Nicholas
Anastasiadis with 339. None of
their other boys has as vet passed
School Bd. Candidate
i
Louis J. Avallone, a resident
of Farmingdale for the past five
years, has announced his candidacy
for the office of Member
of The Board of Education to fill
the unexpired term created by
the resignation of Sheldon Bernstein;
which term ends on June
30, 1976.
Avallone resides at 29 Colonial
Drive with his wife and two
children, ages 13 and 8. They are
presently enrolled in the local
schools, Weldon E. Howitt and
Woodward Parkway.
Avallone, a graduate of the
Stonier Graduate School of
Banking, is employed as a Vice
President of Nassau Trust
Company in charge of Branch
Operations. Formerly, he was
Vice President of the one billion
dollar Republic National Bank.
As Vice President he was
responsible for the operating
activities of their nineteen
branch system. Eighteen years of
experience in the banking field
have exposed him to the intricacies
and financial aspects of
the business world.
From 1963 to 1967 he was actively
involved as a Committeeman
with Brooklyn Cub
Scout Pack 19 and continued as a
Webelos Leader in Farmingdale
with Cub Scout Pack 606 upon
relocating here.
Avallone expressed his views
as follows:
" The ever increasing cost of
maintaining a high level of
quality education and the
tremendous tax strain placed on
us have highlighted our concern

the 100 vote leader mark.
Tops among the girls for the
Miss Hardscrabble crown is
Mary Milone with 181 votes. She
is followed by Nancy Steenbuck
with 131 votes, sister Gloria
Steenbuck, 128 votes, Janet Cast,
106, and Kathy Moeller, 78.
There is still plenty of time for
new contestants to catch the
leaders in the race for the top
awards. Master and Miss Hardscrabble
will each receive a $ 100
savings bond and their two
runner- ups will receive $ 50
bonds. The winners will also lead
the Hardscrabble Day Parade
down Main Street on May 24.
New contestants entering this

The Village of Farmingdale will be able to hold the
line on its tax rate for the next fiscal year in spite of
inflationary costs. The tax rate will remain $ 2.82 per
hundred of assessed valuation for village residents.
Mayor John T. Hallahan and
the trustees of the village made
known their budget plans
Monday night during the annual
reorganization meeting. A public
hearing on the full village budget
will be held Monday, April 14, at 8
during the reorganization
meeting included the naming of
Lilian Kawolski as deputy village
clerk. Fred Rathgaber will
replace Norman Krasnow as
Chairman of the Board of Fire
Commissioners and Hinze
Riedrich and George Kuck were
named new fire commissioners.
Edwin Henn was named the
new chairman of the Village
Planning Commission, taking the
place of Mildred DeMarco who
was named as the new chairman
of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Carl Dittmeier was appointed to
the vacancy on the planning
board.
Reappointed to the same posts
as last year were Willis B.
Carman, Jr. as Deputy Mayor
and the various standing committees
of the Board of Trustees.
Serving on the committees are:
Finance: Mayor Hallahan,
chairman, Krasnow and Carman.
Insurance: Krasnow,

Charge Three
In Burglary
police in a burglary attempt on
an Eastern Parkway firm in
Farmingdale.
Early Saturday morning,
guard John Phenning saw lights
at the Wittaker Corporation's
Plastic Division at 361 Eastern
Parkway and called police.
Members of the 8th Precinct's
Anti- Crime Unit arrested Bendall
Harrison, 25,.- ff 173 Steal Place,
Amityville, i « iar the rear door,
and George Williams, 31, of 500
45th St. Copiague and Lathan
Smith, 31, of 41 Jackson St.,
Farmingdale, after a four mile
chase.
Near the rear door police
recovered three rolls of copper
print, used to print designs on
plastic. When melted down the
copper would be worth about 70
cents per pound. Each roll
weighed 300 pounds.
The three men were held on
bail and were to face District
Court Judge Henry Kalinowski
for a hearing yesterday
