mingdale Fire Chief James
Crispino won the only contested
seat on the Board of Fire Commissioners.
Considered a huge turnout for
this type of election, voters were
prompted to respond by a five
way race for the Fire Commissioner
seat. Usually candidates
run unopposed in this
election, except when a seat
becomes vacant through
retirement as was the case this
year.
Chief Crispino . led all candidates
with 382 votes. William
Willemsen was second in the
polling with 293 votes. He was
followed by Jerry Eich, 228, Roy
Bazylewicz, 143, and Ed Schmidt*
61, for a total of 1107 votes cast.
The South Farmingdale Water
District conducted their election
at the same time, but not on the
same ballot. Separate voting
machines and registration were
required. The water district
election was also held in the
North Massapequa Firehouse.
George Meyerhoff, the only
candidate, was re- elected to the
Board of Water Commissioners
with 450 votes cast.

Regents Scholars Named
The New York State Education
Department announced the
names of 59 Farmingdale School
pupils who have won Regents
College Scholarships this year.
These scholarship awards are
effective as of the 1977- 78
academic year. Each Regents
College Scholarship entitles the
recipient to an award of $ 250 a
year for up to 5 years of study at
an approved program in New
York State. Also named were 48
alternates.
The basis for awarding
scholarships is the score on the
Regents Scholarship and College
Qualification Test, a 6- hour test
administered each year
measuring high school
achievement and general
academic ability. A total of approximately
157,000 candidates in
1200 high schools in New York
State wrote the examination on
September 29, 1976.
The law establishes a total of
18,843 county scholarships to be
allocated among the counties of
the State, with each county
receiving a number of scholarships
in proportion to the number
of residents in such county
graduating from high school the
previous year.
In the event that any
scholarship winner declines the
award or is unable to accept the
award for any reasony the
scholarship is offered to the
highest ranking alternate.
