It was a typical championship
game. Two strong football
powers, Farmingdale and
Berner, knocked helmets for 48
full minutes Saturday in a hard
hitting, defense oriented Four- A
Championship game. When the
dust settled and the pads stopped
crashing, Farmingdale emerged
on top, 19- 8, and became the
leading candidate for the Rutgers
Cup.
The Dalers have now played in
{ our championship games and
have yet to lose one. The victory
over previously unbeaten Berner
( Conference II champs) pushed
the Dalers final record to 7- 1. The
only other undefeated team in
Nassau County, Cold Spring
Harbor, lost to Floral Park
Saturday, leaving no team in the.
county undefeated.
Burglar Gets
Holiday Treat
The Friendly Ice Cream parlor
at 330 Fulton Street, Farmingdale,
was burglarized
Thanksgiving Day and a money
bag containing $ 100 was taken.
Eighth precinct police reported
the building, located at the corner
of Fulton and Heisser Lane, was
entered sometime during the
night through a jimmied side
window. The discarded bank
deposit type money bag was
found Friday morning in the
parking lot adjacent to Merlin
Printing Co. on Heisser Lane.
The Merlin employees who found
the pouch notified police.
The residence at 21
Meadowwood Lane was also
visited by a burglar on Saturday,
Nov. 27, between 6: 30 p. m. and
midnight. The intruder entered
through a side window and left
with a collection of assorted
jewelry.
Leaf Pick- Up
The Village of Farmingdale
Highway Department will conclude
its Fall leaf pick- up on or
about December 15.
Residents are asked to have
their leaves out on the street on
that date.
After December 15, it will be
necessary to put any remaining
leaves in plastic bags or other
suitable containers for pick- up by
the garbage collector or highway
truck.
The Daily News rated Farmingdale
first in the county after
the win. " We are the prime
contenders for the Rutgers Cup
and we definitely have a good
shot at getting it. Our main
competition is Port Washington
( 8- 1)," said coach Don Snyder.
The Dalers and Port each suffered
their sole loss to East
Meadow.
From the start of the game to
the final gun, neither team was
able to generate much offense.
The Dalers managed 158 yards on
the ground and 170 total yards.
Berner was held to 47 total yards.
The Dalers allowed only four of 16
Bison passes to be completed for -
~ 3yatdsand also registered five
sacks. " Both teams play tough
defense. They stopped us'pretty
well, and our defense really came
through for us," noted Snyder.
The key to the game, then, rode
on breaks. In the first half, both
teams took advantage of opponents
mistakes enroute to
scores. The Dalers took an 8- 0
lead in the first quarter when a
clocked punt gave them
possession on the Berner 22. Pat
Smith promptly hauled in a 22
yard pass from Bob Heller. Dean
Perri added the conversion.
Berner tied the game in the
second quarter when the Dalers
decided to try a quick kick on
third and twelve from the Daler
35. " We wanted to maintain good
field position," said Snyder.
However, Steve Pulaski's kick
was blocked and Berner took
over on the Daler 33. " A quick
kick was the right call, they
weren't ready for it. It just wasn't
executed properly," stated
Snyder.
The Bisons drove slowly
toward the Daler goal line and
scored on Steve Richardeli's one
yard burst. Bob Hughes caught a
pass from quarterback Mark
Chamberlain to tie the score at
eight.
Early in the second half play
was deadlocked. Neither team
was able to move and the squads
traded punts, Late in the third
quarter Pat Smith and Paul
Lankf ord combined on a play that
changed the complexion of the
game. Chamberlain, attempting
to pass, was hit by Smith just as
he released the ball causing a bad
pass. Lankf ord picked off the
poorly thrown ball and streaked
50 yards down the sidelines to the
Berner 13. " That play definitely
gave us some momentum. It was
a big play," said Snyder.
Still, the Daler offense stalled
