Firemen Gitfe- Hero Aw& rd
A South Farmingdale resident
who is credited with saving his
neighbor's life, was honored
Sunday by the South Farmingdale
Fire Department for
his heroic rescue.
South Farmingdale Fire Chief
Jim Crispino, presented a plaque
to Dennis Hickey of 15 Hitchcock
Lane " on behalf of the
Board of Fire Commissioners,
my officers and men" for saving
the life of his neighbor, Mrs.
Louise Polichette on August 13.
Hickey, who was in his back
yard, heard • the explosion that
occurred, when a can of charcoal
lighter fluid blew up and set fire
to Mrs. Polichette's clothing.
Without hesitation, Hickey
grabbed a blanket from the
clothes line, ran next door and
wrapped Mrs. Polichette in the
blanket smothering the flames.
Hickey's wife, Mary Ellen, called
the South Farmingdale Fire
Dept.
Chief Crispino stated, " There is
no doubt in my mind that Mr.
Hickey's quick action saved Mrs.
Polichette's life and the least we
in the Fire service can do is pay
tribute to Mr. Hickey for his act
of heroism."
Mrs. Polichette is now
recovering from her burns in the
Nassau County Medical Center in
East Meadow. She was released
from the intensive care unit at
the hospital last week.
Hickey is employed by the New
