The opening of Catholic
Charities' Ecumenical Center for
Senior Adults, which will offer
the elderly low cost, hot lunches,
social services and a wide range
of recreational activities, is set
for Monday, March 28, at 145
Prospect Street, Farmingdale..
Located in Fellowship Hall of
St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the
center will be open from 10 a. m.
to 3 p. m. each weekday. Aside
from nourishing meals and social
services, the program will
provide health and nutrition
education and information and
referral services. There will also
be group trips, picnics, lectures,
arts and crafts classes, bingo,
card and board games and other
social and cultural events.
The program will serve persons
of all faiths who live in
Farmingdale, South Farmingdale,
Massapequa,
Massapequa Park and Seaford.
Although it is open to all residents
of the five villages age 60 and
over, it is primarily designed for
those with low incomes and those
who can't shop and cook for
themselves. There will be a
suggested fee for meals, based on
the individual's ability to pay, but
no one will be excluded for
financial reasons.

of the Diocese of Rockville
Centre, the program is being
funded jointly by the federal
government, under Title VII of
the Older Americans Act, the
Nassau County Department of
Senior Citizen Affairs and
Catholic Charities in cooperation
with the New York State Office
for the Aging.
According to Michael J.
Petrizzi, Nassau director of
Catholic Charities, the establishment
of the agency's newest hot
lunch program ( there are others
in Amityville and Rockville
Centre) was made possible
through the cooperation of a
number of community figures.
Helping in the initial planning
stages were Mayor John T.
Hallahan of Farmingdale and the
Rev. Donald R. Shane, pastor of
St. Kilian's Catholic Church,
Farmingdale. Petrizzi said
Mayor Hallahan also explored
the community for sites and
located the one at St. Luke's.
Others instrumental in getting
the program off the ground were
the Rev. James R. Corgee, pastor
of St. Luke's, who made
Fellowship Hall available for the
program, and Mrs. Frank Cerny,
St. Luke's parish activities
chairperson, who helped ready
the facility for use and is
recruiting volunteers for the
program.
