S.G.A. Cuts 1977-78 Budget $50,000.
This years Student Govern-ment
Association (S.G.A.) has
cut the 1977/78 Budget by
$50,000 because of an
overestimated enrollment
figure. This move was made to
avoid the type of overexpen-diture
which occured in last
year's budget.
Last years Student Govern-ment
expected to collect
$465,000 and the 1976/77
budget was planned according
to this figure. Because of
miscalculated enrollment
figures only $400,000 was
collected.
In a letter to Mr. Frank
Dellaquila (Faculty Student
Association Treasurer), Marc
Sanders (last years Student
Government President) stated,
'^we did not find out what we
had collected as an activity fee
until April 22,1977, because of
this we were unaware of the fact
that we did not have enough
money to cover our budgets.
This not only presented us with
financial constraints for
summer operations (we havte
been forced to postpone two
enormous renovation projects
for the building indefinitely),
but we have also had to review
already approved budgets for
1977/78 and cut out an
additional $50,000. If we had
been made aware of the
financial situation back in
January 1977 we would have
been able to decrease our
spring activities and propose
budgets for next year without
them having to be reviewed
after they were approved.**
Marc Sanders also accused
F.S.A. of not fulfilling the
requirements of the contract
between the two organizations.
He claims that only four
financial statements were
received even though they arc
supposed to send one out every
month. He also said line items
and trust accounts were
permitted to be overdrawn
without advance notice, certain
checks were delayed more than
two weeks, some deposits were
not acknowledged with deposit
slips and check cashing service
to students was not made
readily available.
In response to these charges,
Mr. Frank Dellaquila, stated
Last Years S.G.A. Executive Board ( L toP,fVlarc Sanders,
Pres., Phil Linde, Vice Pres.,& Joe Tumbarrello I Places
Blame For Financial Trouble On F.S.A..
that if a line item is overdrawn
it is Kathy Farrell*s (S.G.A.
Administrative Assistant)
responsibility to know about it.
F.S.A. just keeps the books. He
also said that no checks were
delayed two weeks in F.S.A.
Each check is signed by two to
six people and a delay could
have occured during the time it
took for all these signatures to
appear. He also claimed that
check cashing was made
available to the students but
sometimes F.S.A. would run
out of cash. If Marc Sanders
would have notified the
Faculty Student Association of
the problem when he found out
about it instead of waiting until
June to say anything, the
amount of cash on hand could
have been increased sooner.
Mr. Dellaquila admitted that
they may not have sent out all
of the financial statements they
should have. He said although
F.S.A. is not perfect, S.G.A.*s
money problems were not
caused by F.S.A. They are only
the bookkeeper for the Senate,
they did not plan the budget
nor did they approve it.
