Bedell Goes on Sabbatical
The position of Vice President
of Student Affairs is an
important one at Farmingdale
and at any college campus. The
person who holds this postion
is a major contributor to the
student's life in regards to his or
her development. For the past
6 1/2 years Dr. Paul Bedell has
held this job.
Dr. Bedell V s earned a PHD
for counseling at St. John's
University; he has also worked
at Nassau County Community
College for 14 years, 5 of those
years as Dean of students. He
started here at Farmingdale in
September of 1974 and his time
here has been spent working on
the basic goal of the Vice
President of Student Affairs.
Students, and people in
general, have many talents
which are either quite visible or
hidden; Dr. Bedell feels his
purpose is to "focus on these
talents and try to help the
individual reach his of her
objective."
There are plenty of challenges
and problems in any job. Dr.
Bedell follows the procedure of
"chipping away at the problems
bit by bit until they are solved.**
Naturally like any organization
there is red tape and
restrictions which slow down
and even at times add to the
existing problems but you have
to learn to deal with this.
On the more positive side there
are many beneficial programs
at Farmingdale in which the
Vice President of Student
Affairs is in charge of. Besides
the academic aspect there are
many progams on campus
which help "fill the gaps of
transition between what is
taught in the classroom and
what is needed in the "real
world". "Some of these are: the
Career Counseling and
Development Center, E.O.P.
Counselors, Psychologists and
Residence Hall Counselors. An
important area for develop-ment
is the, many clubs and
association located on campus.
The Student Activity Office is
located in Roosevelt Hall; there
are many publication and
notices about the various
activites. There are even
workshops available on
campus which help develop
leadership training and offer
tutoring. Being at school serves
the purpose of helping develop
a well-rounded person, this
means becoming involved!
Dr. Bedell has put in his time
working on and in all of these
areas, but as of February 1st,
1981 he chose to take a 6-month
Sabatical which ends August
31th. Dr. Bedell assures that
this is his own choice, having
decided on relaxing, taking
courses and studying. He feels
that a job can "become too
much a part of you, although it
is important, it is only one part
of my life. I would like to
explore other opportunities
and outlets which are
available."
There is a possibility of Dr.
BedelFs return to Farmingdale;
if he docs choose to come back
he will take a position as
Professor, possibly in the area
of Psychology. The person who
has now filled his old position is
Dean Ramon Rodriguez. Dean
Rodriguez has every intention
of continuing with the policy of
doing what is best to improve
and maintain Student Affairs.

Tuition Hikes on
SUNY Campuses
( ( BOOM
"BOOM," one day it just
might happen and nobdy will
run. Bomb scares are not
funny, they're dangerous.
On February 4, the call came
through about 10:35 to the
campus police. A bomb was set
to go off in Greenley Hall
(Library) at 11:00. Four
campus police squad cars
evacuated the building and
proceeded to use a dog to sniff
out the bomb. Two hours later
no BOOM. Apparently, it was
a false alarm. No bomb was
found. Well, at least it was
false and no damage was done.
But what would happen if it
was real? Would you run? Or
would you think it was a false
alarm? Let's not wait to lind

Just when you thought it was
safe to go back to SUNY . . . A
tuition hike
SUNY colleges were once
one of the lowest-costing
schools to attend until the
proposed tuition hike of $150-
300 per year. This will make
SUNY's tuition more than
$1,000 per year, among the
highest for state universities.
On February 12, in Roosevelt
Hall, a tuition rally was held to
ban this increase. Tom Croce
led this along with all CUB
members. The rally lasted
about 45 minutes. During this
time, a petition was sent
around which many students
signed.
This hike not only increases
tuition but also dorm room
rates have increased $150 and
board rates $50. This brings
SUNY education to a total of
$4,000 yearly, which is too
expensive for some of us to
handle. Students are now
forced to attend other
universities or take out larger
loans. To top it all off, BEOG
was recently cut by $50, and
interest rates for loans have
increased. President Ronald
Reagon has also announced
that all financial aid programs
will be cut back and student
loans will be much more
difficult to obtain. This now
makes it almost impossible to
pay such a hike. You may also
be wondering, well, what about
SUNY's budget?
Governor Carey has just
released a budget for SUNY
that is inadequate in a number
of areas: 1. "Elinriinating 200
f a c u l t y p o s i t i o n s . " 2.
that all residence: assistants
(RA's) pay all dorm rent
increases. 3. Eliminating the
State University Student
Tuition Assistance (SUSIA)
program, a financial aid
program designed for lower
income students. 4. Inadequate
funding for building repairs
and equipment replacement.
Chancellor Wharton is asking
Carey to amend his budget to
allow such an increase. We
have until February 19 before
Carey amends his proposal.
The trustees are not allowed
to implement any tuition
increase unless authorized by
legislature. So, we can continue
to fight until we win. Student
participation is very important.
There is a campaign to stop
tuition increase called SASU,
please join! Too much is
enough, lets not raise it a penny
more. ^^ .
