From September 15, 1984, to January 15, 1985, executive vice-president
and provost, Dr. Joseph Monaco, will serve as acting
president. Dr. Frank Cipriani, the president of S.U.N.Y. at
Farmingdale, recently announced that he will be leaving temporarily
on a studv leave. .
Dr. Cipriani will be studying abroad with the Commerce Dept of
Education, and will also work with them in the field of high-technology,
to see if it is possible that these ideas that are used on
Long Island could be adopted elsewhere.
Dr. Monaco has served in several positions since his arrival at the
College in 1967. He began as Assistant Business Manager, later
advanced to Budget Control Officer, Director of Business Affairs,
Associate Vice-President of Administration, and Vice-President of
Continuing Education.
Dr. Monaco accomplished many goals during his work as As-sociate
Vice President of Administration and Vice President of
Continuing Education. He developed the College Budget System,
and has assisted in making the evening students a major interest in
this school.
During his four months as acting president, he will continue to
make this school a good quality of life on campus for students and
faculty and instill pride for the College. In the coming months he
hopes to bring Administration and the students closer together, so as
to talk about student issues, and ask students to assist on campus
maintenance.
When asked what the school will be trying to do to cut down on
student failures and drop out rate. Dr. Monaco said it is of major
concern to the school, and that teachers are being encouraged to refer
the students to the counseling center as soon as possible.
Dr. Monaco married his chiidhood Sweetheart Evelyn at the age of
twenty, and they now live in Smithtown with their three children.
S.U.N.Y has played a large part in Dr. Monaco's family. Dr.
Monaco, his wife Evelyn and his son Joseph have all attended
Farmingdale. Joseph graduated as an All-American where he played
for the Championship Lacrosse team and helped win in the Nationals
that year. His wife is now a Doctorate student at Columbia U-niversity.
Dr. Monaco is also a major sports fan. He believes the Mets are one
of the best baseball teams anywhere, that this year has set the
foundation for being a Championship team. According to Dr.
Monaco, Darryl Strawberry, the Met outfielder is one of the best in
baseball. And Dr. Monaco is one of the best in our administra-tion!
