student Senate Unconstitutionally and
Unconsciously Approves $7,000
By Steve Conley
Rambler Editor-in-Chief
The Student Government Association of
SUNY Farmingdale unconstitutionally gave
roughly 7,000 dollars to "itself.
On a not so infamous December 7, 1988
a senator of Student Government proposed that
SGA should sponsor a fashion show. Roughly
four months later, that same individual, no longer
having his senatorial status, received 6,950 for
the purpose of having the First Annual Dinner/
Fashion Show. At first glance, these events would
not seem odd. Further investigation has proven
otherwise.
The senator/now student who proposed
the Fashion Show was Brandon Seaton. While no
Student Government Association minutes men-tion
Mr. Seaton' s dismissal from office, his name
has not appeared on the attendance record since
the meeting four months ago. This was the same
meeting he mentioned the fashion show. What-ever
the reason, Mr. Seaton lost his position as a
senator.
Two months passed and soon there was
talk of Fashion Show try-outs. The try-outs went
on and participants were selected. The date for
the event had been set, sponsors were arranged,
and for the last two months, Roosevelt Hall
became the home of fashion show practice. This
event was so big it moved a Campus Activities
Board Comedian back an hour. All that needed to
be done was to get the okay from the Financial
Affairs Board and then the Senate. Time was
ticking away and the date for the fashion show
was closing in. Then just twelve days before the
show was to happen, a proposal was written up
and prepared for Student Government. The sen-ate
voted and and approved the 6,950 request.
There were three abstentions, fourteen ayes (yes)
and one no. The event took place and money was
spent.
Now you're probably wondering, "Where
on earth did this ex-senator get the permission to
make all these plans and commit all these people
to an event that hadn't even gotten the approval
of SGA yet?". Jim Sullivan, the president of

SGA,gave such approval.
The Constitution clearly states All finan-cial
matters of the S.G.A. shall he considered and
acted upon by the Financial Affairs Board. This
was not done. The proposal went directly to the
senate. The word All is the key and since there
was no motion from the senate to suspend this
rule, SGA acted unconstitutionally when it enter-tained
the proposal. Without first going to the
Financial Affairs Board.
After the vote, this reporter questioned
the individual senate members. Three members
were not available to answer questions. Of the
remaining fifteen members, only three new ex-actly
what the line item "programming" was for
(line items comprise the entire proposal - see the
accompanying proposal). The three that did know
exactly what that the two hundred and fifty dol-lars
were for, replied that "everyone knows that".
Obviously not.
This indicates two situations. One, the
remaining fifteen voting members of SGA, in-cluding
the vice-president and treasurer, did not
totally know what they were voting on. Two,
since the information of what programming is
was not given at the meeting, the three members
who knew, found out outside of Student Govern-ment.
The three members that did know what the
line item was for voted yes.
Indicating that of the fourteen members
who voted yes, eleven did not know precisely
what they were approving the 6,950 dollars for.
This is not an article about the fashion
show. But an observation of the events that
transpired leading to the fashion show. This
reporter sees no point in disputing the aesthetic
value of the show itself
Sullivan approached Andrea Mack, Stu-dent
Govemment's Treasurer, before the meet-ing
and asked if she would be offended if the pro-
