BODY ART - IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
by: Gail Schweid
Don't be surprised
that in the near future, you see
tattoo parlors and piercing places
along the streets of NYC as often
as hot dog stands. Body Art is
becoming more and more
popular everyday. There is
probably not one person out there
who, if they do not already have
something, isn't thinking about
it. Body piercing has been around
for centuries. Contemporary
piercing became popular in the
1970's and has really taken off in
the past two years.
There are many
different types of body art. There
are tattoos and the trend of body
piercing. A few places that you
can get pierced are the nose,
eyebrow, lip, tongue, navel,
nipple, chin, the popular ears,
and of course the unmentionable
parts. A popular place to get
your "parts" pierced is Utopia in
Hicksville. The job is done by
Allen, Dave, or Billy.
There are four
places on the body that are
commonly pierced. Those are
the tongue, navel, eyebrow, and
nipple. The most painful places
are the genitals and the nipples.
You must be 18 years of age to
get a piercing without a parent's
consent. You must also sign a
release form saying that you are
of age and they are not
responsible. There have been a
few cases where people came
back to have the ring taken out
because their parents did not
approve. Then again there are
parents who bring their young
children to get something
pierced.
Surface piercing is
onethat Utopia will not do. When
asked why, it was explained that
there is nothing for the hoop or
bar to grab onto. When it starts
to heel, it'll be pushed out.
No one
recommends doing piercing to
yourself or anyone else if you
are not a professional. In order
to become a pierceryou must be
knowledgeable in anatomy,
actions and reactions in
sterilization, and where not to
and to pierce. You need to have
a lot of time and dedication and
be an apprentice to a
professional piercer. There is a
high rate of infection with those
who

OVERGROWN
AND UNDERNURISHED
By: Edwara Aianveraian
Picture a campus lush
rolling green lawns, majestic
trees, courtyards, and gardens
that capture your eyes and hold
you in awe . A place where you'd
say "I would love to spend the
next couple of years here!". All
the splendid nature would actually
want to go to school and study on
the green lawns underthat maple
tree that you see in all the ads.
So, where is this place? Harvard?
No maybe its Penn State ,orcould
this be our own Farmingdale?
Here we have it all, just like every
other schools have. We have the
potential. So what is going on?
Look around, the weeds
are taking over . It is easier to
walkacrossthe brown, overgrown
grass than it is to go across the
cement path that is overridden
with leaves from last fall. What
about our courtyards? Did you
know we had courtyards? We do?!
We even have gardens and
plaques also. Look around there
are plaques everywhere.
Couples are ctoing it too!!! - peircing that is.
However, these recognitions are
covered by all the poorly
maintnenced and unkempt
grounds. The picture turns ugly.
Let us take a look
at the problem we have. This
place, for the lack of a better word
looks like crap. Whose problem is
it? Well, first it is everyone's
responsibility to keep this place
clean, but are you going to come
in on a Sunday to cut the grass.
The great mass of students here
at Farmingdale pay tuition. We
take care of the cost. Who is
working for us?
Enter the Physical Plant.
The Physical Plant consists of
the men and women that take
care of our Farmingdale. The
Plant controls all the operations
at the university, such as
custodial, maintenance, and the
grounds. The plant's job is to
maintain the conditions and
appearance of Farmingdale. Is
there a problem? Why does the
campus look like it does? After
speaking with Mr. John Dzinanka
