In Honor of
Anthony ( Duke) Ducato
By Mary McCaffery
Family, friends and former colleagues gathered at the JFK Middle School to
honor the memory of Tony Ducato who had served as Assistant Principal and
Principal at the school from 1967 through 1985.
As one of his last duties as superintendent, Dr. Richard Marsh opened the
ceremony introducing George McElroy whose tenure as principal of Bethpage
High School paralleled Tony's at the Middle School.
George and Tony were colleagues and good friends. In his comments,
George related stories about Tony's legendary disciplinary procedures and his
heartfelt devotion to his faculty and students.
George also told a number of funny stories taken from the Ducato- McElroy
" Sunshine Painters" episodes in their lives. It is a good thing they both loved
their day jobs!
Dr. Antoinette McLeod, Tony's successor as JFK principal, said how intimi-dated
she felt moving into the position after an icon like Tony. Typical of Tony,
he was there to help her during the transition and through all the years she spent
in the Bethpage Schools.
Toni Ann, Duke's daughter, thanked everyone on behalf of her mother,
Rosemary, her sister, JoAnn, and the other members of the family. She went on
to say it was a fitting honor to have a tree planted in her father's memory and to
be able to watch it grow and flourish in front of the school her dad loved so
much.
Special thanks to Frank Carmelengo, Emil's Landscaping, for donated the
Bradford Pear - a sturdy tree in honor of a gentleman who devoted his entire
professional career to the youth of Bethpage.
