TOO CLOSE TO CALL! Nassau County Executive Race Ends With NO RESULTS... YET!
Republican challenger Edward Mangano
Despite close gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, and a
tight race to replace Rep. John McHugh in New York's twenty- third
Congressional District, the real political action was right here in
Nassau County.
Although many pundits were expecting a blowout victory for Tom
Suozzi and the Nassau Democratic Party in the race for County
Executive, Bethpage's Ed Mangano certainly surprised the doubtful as
the race turned out to be way too close to call. " I have been saying
since I began this journey that it was going to be close," Mangano said.
" Our polling indicated that when people were presented with my plan
for Nassau, a plan to reduce the size of government and residents'
taxes, they were extremely favorable," he continued.
As has been already widely reported, Ed Mangano is within 237
votes of victory. " Basically, it's going to come down to the absentee
ballots and those historically favor the Republican candidate," said
Mangano. There are approximately 12,000 absentee ballots, 6,500
which have already been received. Overseas military ballots have until
November tenth to be returned and counted.
Voting machines have also been impounded so that they can recon-cile
the results of each machine district by district.
" 1 am very hopeful that when all is said and done, I will be
Nassau's next County Executive, stated Mangano. This was a grass
Democrat incumbent Thomas Suozzi
roots effort and 1 have to thank everyone for all of the help and sup-port.
I am sincerely grateful to so many people who volunteered their
time and helped with our campaign. It has been truly overwhelming
and humbling."
The County Executive race wasn't the only surprise for Nassau
Democrats; the County Legislature will be under Republican control
for the first time in 10 years with the win of Howard J. Koppel over
Jeffrey W. Toback in the Legislative District. As of the latest
update from the Board of Elections, the margin of victory for the
Republicans appears to have increased by two seats, as Joseph V
Belesi leads incumbent David L. Mejias in the Legislative
District although absentee ballots look like they will play a role in
this race as well. Another closely watched race was the
Legislative District; however, the Republican challenger. Christian
Browne is trailing incumbent Democrat Joseph K. Scannell by i f •
votes. Kathleen Rice defeated Joy Watson for the position of Di
Attorney and the race between George Maragos and Howard
Weitzman for Comptroller was considered too close to call as \ n
went to press.
In the 17th Legislative District, which encompasses Bethpag '
Hicksville, Rose Walker easily defeated Arshad Majid.
