BETHPAGE FIREMEN DO IT AGAIN
It was a beautiful evening as the Bethpage Firemen
paraded down {Stewart Avenue, over to Broadway,
and back to the Firehouse. The display of old-time
fighting equipment was a sharp contrast to
the modern fire fighting equipment the 170-man
volunteer unit has in Bethpage today. Chief Francis
Pendl proudly led his :t Firemen before the admiring
spectators. Hundreds of children and adults
Jhronged through .the- Jirehouse and- enjoyed the -
exhibits as iwell as the free coffee and donuts.
Although it was reminiscent of a good old country
fair, the idea behind the FIREARMA was far
more serious. Demonstrations indicated how quickly
fires can be started and how easily great harm
can occur through careless use of electricity
and combustibles. Techniques in smothering fires
and mourth-to-mouth breathing were vividly demonstrated.
The children were treated to Walt Disney's fire
and accident prevention cartoons. They really shook
the house with their shreiks of laughter but as one
fireman said, "they are learning about fire pre-
Fire Chief Frank Pendl who was in charge of the
Open House said "a lot of people worked hard to
put on this show and we owe them a big vote of
thanks." Bethpage can truly be proud of its fine
Fire Department.
Citizens Organize
'Watchdog' Committee
A "Watchdog" committee was
organized at the meeting of the
newly-formed Bethpage Citizens
Action Group on Tuesday evening.
Over 100 local residents met with
James WeirandJamesMac-
Donald leaders of the group. A
broad plan of community action
against multiple dwellings in
Bethpage was prepared. A
spokesman said, 'the average
person does not realize the situation
and we intend to keep them
informed so this type of thing does
not go unnoticed."
The furore started as a result
of the approvarby the Board of
Supervisors of Oyster Bay for the
building of a 60-unit apartment
complex, at Nibbe Lane, behind the
Bethpage Library. The town
board had held a public hearing
on the garden apartment application
in June and since no protests
were lodged approval was
granted. Several weeks ago the
Bethpage Board of Education and >
several cjvic grojmg joined in a
protest and askeenme town boarV^
to set asideits decision to approve
the application to construct the
apartments. The Board of Education
opposed the zoning decision
on the grounds thartt did
not have sufficient time to present
its case and wanted an opportunity
to study the effect on
added school costs which might
result in a possible increase of
student population as a result of
these apartments. .•'•••
Due to the pressure brought
by the School Board and a 5,000-
name petition presented to the
town board, a new hearing was
scheduled for Tuesday, October
18 at 10:00 a.m. at T«wn Hall.
The "Watchdog" committee
made an extensive review of all
the issues involved and a spokesman
said "an exact program of
public' information to the Bethpage
community before the TOB
meeting on October 18 is to be
started. Area Captains have been
assigned to coordinate the distribution
of literature and make
arrangements for the public participating
at the town board meeting
on the 18th. The C^izens
Action Group endorsed a massive
assault on-their elected representatives
through letters."
