In an effort to build a dialogue
between, teenagers and their
community hospitals, Nassau
Hospital has started a series of
Career Days with a difference. A
couple of months ago several bus
loads of high school teenagers
spent a half day at the hospital
establishing contact with various
chiefs of staff and their
"specialties.
Earlier this week, February
26th, about 150 counselors, high
school nurses representatives
Irom various other community
hospitals, will spend a full day at
Nassau coming to grips with the
details of health careers.
The next step will be to bring
back the teenagers and invite
them to participate in a dialogue
on health and medical careers
with panels of medical and
hospital experts. This will be
followed by a symposium for
parents and then a gradual
broadening of the Career Day
programs to include all interested
teenagers.
The series .of Career Days,
Teach-ins, or whatever you might
want to call. them, are the
brainchild of Mrs. William
Fergg, Director of Volunteers
who has built up one of the most
successful hospital volunteer
programs in the entire nation.
Under her guidance volunteers
gave 154,000 full working days to
the various hospital departments
during 1968 alone.

ALBANY -- Seven Nassau
County Republican assemblymen
have submitted a bill in the
Legislature which would require
the issuaance of a State permit
for ownership, possession, sale or
purchase of a rifle or shotgun.
The State currently requires
permits for hand guns.
Assemblyman George J.
Farrell, Jr., spokesman for the
Nassau lawmakers, said their
measure would establish two
separate classes of "long gun"
permits to be issued by the
Conservation Department. Class
"A" permits, Farrell explained,
would cost $10 and would be
issued to persons engaged in the
business of buying, selling . or
repairing rifles or shotguns.
There would., be no charge for
Class '•B" permits Which would
kf. jssued to aU other persons
eligible, he said. *~\
Regarding eligibility Farrell
said the bill specifically states
that permits will not be issued to
persons under 18years of age; or
those who have been convicted of
a felony or violation of -any
provision of Article 220 of the
Penal Law (which covers the
possession and sale of dangerous
drugs); or any person who has
been ruled mentally defective or
has been confined to a mental
. hospital (unless a licensed
physician specializing in
psychiatric medicine certifies in
writing that the applicant is a
"suitable, person" to hold the
permit); or any person who is a
habitual drunkard.
The bill exempts persons who
possess "rifles or shotguns which
are incapable of being fired and
which are used as ornaments,
antiques, or as part of a color
guard by any patriotic
organization." Also exempted
are persons under 18 who carry
or use a long gun in the company
of a permit holder.
Under the proposed law,
permits would be issued within 30
days of application. Persons
denied a permit may appearand
receive a hearing in the county in
which they reside "no later than
21 days after notice (of the appeal)
is received by the Commissioner
of... Conservation,
Farrell said.
Both classes of permits would
be issued for three years and
would be renewed upon request
providing there have been no
violations recorded against the
permit holder such as those listed
above.

A Jetport At
Calverton?
Br Buddy Mazzara
The Long Island Association
Ad-Hoc Committee on Aviation
Development headed by
Sebastian Albrecht of Farrn-ingdale
recommends that the
Government-owned property
where Grumman has it's facility
at Calverton would be a desirable
Jetport. Albrecht made his
statement at the all day session of
the Joint Legislative Committee
Meeting on Transportation at
Hofstra University.
The Legislative Committee
headed by Senator Edward J.
Speno was holding it's 10th in a
series of meetings throughout the
State to get views from all walks
of life on the programs of all
modes of mass transportation as
'they effect the various areas of
the State.
••- Recently Senattit. spmo U A
Samuel Greenberg have placed
bills in the hopper setting a
deadline of 2 years for the
selection of a new Jetport Site.
The members of the Committee
and the Press representatives
adjourned at 3:00 p.m. and went
by bus to the Long Island
MacArthur Airport for a briefing
by the FAA.
Christopher Walk, FAA
Manager of the New York Area
said that his area is one of the two
busiest traffic control centers in
the world.
He stated that his center at
MacArthur could accommodate a
Jetport at Calverton without
problems and said a Jetport anywhere
else would take 6, 7 or 8
years to put into being whereas
Calverton could be in operation
as an international airport within
two years.
When questioned as to whether
the advent of the 747 plane
carrying 350 to 490 passengers
wouldn't alleviate the present air
crowding conditions, Mr. Walk
said they could not keep up with
the rate of growth anticipated for
air travel in the near future.
Mr. Walk also said that effective
April 27,1969, that a new
"High Density Rule" would take
" effect in the New York area
limiting the number of 1FR
tivities in the Metropolitan area
and cause more-diversions to
other airports.
, Senator Speno said the loss of
revenue by diversion of Overseas
travel to other airports could
cause an economic loss of
$500,000,000 a year to the New
York area.'
The consensus of opinion is that
Grumman could safety test
planes compatably with the
traffic generated by an inter-
