Apartments For Bethpage? No! No! No!
Over one thousand
residents filled the John F.
Kennedy Junior High
School on Broadway in
Bethpage to overflowing
capacity as they attended
a public meeting sponsored
by CAB (The Civic
Association of Bethpage)
at 8:00 p.m. last Thursday
evening.
"As a civic association it
is our objective to unite the
community through information
and communication
to promote the
welfare of the Bethpage
community," so read the
words on a flyer
distributed within 48 hours
throughout the community.
The word spread like
wildfire "apartments are
planned for Bethpage." In
the interest of all, Ron
Grimaldi, President of
CAB put together an information
meeting,
consisting of School Board
President Anthony
LaFaso, builder of Senior
Citizen housing Joseph
Corsentino, (who is also
the builder of the proposed
apartments on 417
Lea Schottland, unofficial Mayor of Bethpage speaks out against
the proposed plan and joins the community in vigorous protest
against further downzoning and destruction of the hamlet of Bethpage.
Ile received a standing ovation from the audience. Sal Mosca,
TOB Councilman arrived late but he, too, assured the orderly mass
of people that their wishes would he respected in keeping Bethpage
frdni further downzoning. The builder, Joe Corsentino (a brave man
to face such an audience) said he had proposed to act under Section 8
of the HUD law, whereby he would manage the property and taxes
would revert to the community. Seeing the hostility, he said he would
withdraw the proposal if the community was not satisfied.

and Coronet Crescent), Sal
Mosca, TOB Councilman
and CAB officers. The
subject was high density
housing - 58 units on 3
acres. It concerned HUD
subsidized rental and
downzoning of a
residential area.
Without a doubt, the
message was loud and
clear from Bethpage
residents....absolutely no
more apartments in
Bethage no more
downzoning of residential
properties. As one resident
shouted Apartments for
Bethpage? No.

L-R -School Board President Anthony LaFaso reads a statement
from the Bethpage Board of Education regarding their disapproval
of the proposed plan. In Senior Citizen housing LaFaso said he would
be willing to sit down with both the school attorney and builders
attorney to clarify exactly what Section 8 means and the impact it
might have on' the district. Hon Grimaldi, President of CAB sits next
to LaFaso.
A VERY SERIOUS MATTER—the faces of hundreds of residents
observed in this photo catches the concern of Bethpage residents as
they learn about downzoning residential land in their community for
proposed subsidized apartments. ^o f o $ By Jerty Augusta
