VOL. 14 NO. 2 Thursday, June 28,1979 20 cants per copy
Holding the line
Eddie Steiger, owner of the S&S Sunoco Station on
Stewart Avenue, the one just south of the railroad
tracks in Bethpage, called the Tribune office last
Saturday. He said he had plenty of gas and would be
pumping it weekdays from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. He
vowed he would not run dry.
Monday morning we took him on. Starting a few feet
north of Central Avenue on North Sheridan, we eased
the blue station wagon onto the back of the line. It was
9:30 in the morning, the gas gauge read fumes. We
shut-off the motor.
Ten cars ahead, a large van sat in line as immobile
as the rest of the cars in line. The immediate goal was
to see that van make a right turn onto Lafayette
Avenue within an hour. Lafayette is the half way point
to the station. From there,it's all downhill, in more
ways than one.
As the self-imposed deadline neared we had inched to
within 20 feet of Lafayette. The van was poised, ready
to turn.
Two young women rode by on their bikes laughing
and yelling there is a better way. Experienced gas-liners
just smiled. The girls were probably ODD. Their
turn would come tommorrow.
The van made the turn and in its regalness surged a
full fifty feet. We started-up the wagon, which was still
reading fume, and lurched to the junction of Lafayette.
The people in line were relatively calm. One thing
about the line's path that may have helped driver-serenity
is the beauty of this block. Fifty-year old
maple trees line each side of Lafayette, their branches
joining and intertwining, covering the street. Birds are
loud and abundant. We saw blue jays, robins and a
cardinal. We were also relieved that it was downhill, an
easy push to the station. The car was starting slower.
But not to worry. Eddie had vowed he would have gas
for anyone on line. Enjoy the day.
Contemplate.
Meditate. Pray.
After helping push a woman's Valiant which was two
cars ahead we made it to the station and filled up.
Fifteen dollars. It's a small tank. Also, Eddie's prices
are competitive. Still under a dollar.
There was one problem though. Eddie had figured
out his deliveries and how much his men could pump,
and came to the conclusion that they could pump gas
continuously for eight and one half hours daily without
running dry. But the station had been hard hit with
unleaded buyers. And the station did run out of
unleaded for about three hours. Shortly after we left
the station, We saw the Sunoco tanker pull-in to the
station. It was five hours late. Eddie hadn't figured on
that. He made that one mistake. But then he's one gas
proprietor who hasn't yet come to the conclusion that
gas-men have achieved the status somewhere on the
right hand of God.
Eddie will be open every day during the week from
the hours we mentioned. And this time, he says, the
station will do*, its utmost to not only keep the "tiger"
in your tank, but also "Ethyl." Only they call it Sunoco.
Eddie guarantees it.
..,«* We think you can count on that.
