The United Nations - High School Style

November 11, a Metropolitan
Model United Nations Conference
(MetMUNC), was held at John F.
Kennedy High School in Plain-view.
Over 400 persons from 17
different schools along the East
Coast met to discuss world crisis
and also, attempt to solve some
very real world problems.
Apartheid in South Africa, Outer
Space, Middle East, Nuclear
Testing, Atomic Waste Disposal,
and Hostages in Iran were among
the issues on debate. This model
U.N. was run very much like the
real U.N. with Secretary General
Amy Freed, and her two Under
Secretary Generals David
Fischer and Eilleen Snyder, all
seniors at John F. Kennedy.
Chairpeople from many other
committees helped in a team
effort to make the conference run
smoothly.
At opening ceremonies the
special feature was James S.
Sutterlin, Chief of Political
Affairs of the U.N. He gave the
delegates a small background of
the U.S. and issues discussed
there. After his speech the
Secretary . General called
MetMUNG VIII to order.
Not only did this conference
prove to be educational, there
was a lot of fun and games too.
Since no verbal communication
was aloud in the conference
rooms notes were sent via pages.
Also, as an ice breaker several
parties were held.
Sunday at closing ceremonies,
awards were given to delegates
for Honorable Mention, Best
Delegate, and Best Delegation.
The Best High School Award
went to Bishop Ireton since they
were so well prepared and won
most of the other awards.
