PROCLAIMING HUMAN RIGHTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND (I. to
r.) Denis Dillon, District Attorney of Nassau County; Martin
Higgins, National Chairman of the Freedom For All Ireland Committee
of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Nassau County
Executive Francis Purceil join in a Nassau County tribute to the
courage and determination shown by the Irish people in their
struggle against biogtry and discrimination by proclaiming the
month of March "Human Rights in Northern Ireland Month" in
Nassau County.

of Fire Districts following their installation. Colby, who is Chairman
of the Nassau County Board of Supervisors Firemanics Committee,
was the installing officer. The officers for the coming year include

Crisafulli, President John Cortright, 1st Vice President of Bethpage,
Michael Mancini, 2nd Vice President Jackson Pokress and Secretary
Anthony Messina.
LILCO Chief Honored
Dowling College has named
Charles R. Pierce of Lloyd
Harbor, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of the Long
Island Lighting Company, as 1979
recipient of the College's
Distinguished Citizen Award, it
was announced by Dowling
President Dr. Victor P. Meskill.
Mr. Pierce will be honored at the
15th Annual DCA Dinner, a $125-
per-plate, black-tie event to be
held Saturday, June 16, at Colonic
Hill in Hauppauge. Proceeds will
benefit Dowling's Scholarship
Charles R. Pierce Fund.
Walter Looney
Retires
On March 31, 1979 after completing
Forty years of Service
with the Nassau County Police
Department, Assistant Chief
Inspector Walter A. Looney, the
Fifth of Six Brothers who entered
the Police Service in the late
Thirties will retire.
Looney left his position with the
Hicksville Postal Service and
became a Patrolman in the
Second Precinct on April 1,1939.
After serving two years in that
capacity he became the First
Police Officer in New York State
to be drafted into Military Service.
His Army stint of five
years; and four months spanned
the period of World War II and
included assignments in the
Military Police Intelligence and
Military Government, both here
and in the European Theater. At
separation from Service he had
advanced to the Rank of
Lieutenant Colonel.
Upon return from Military
Service his rise through the
ranks was rapid and covered
duty assignments in the Second
Precinct, Third Division,
Training Division, Office of Chief
of Headquarters and Current
Command of the Internal Affairs
Unit. His present position is
within the Third Highest Uniform
Rank.
Chief Looney is a Graduate of
the prestigious FBI National
Academy and holds an Associate
Degree in Criminal Justice from
Nassau Community College and a
Bachelor of Science Degree from
Empire State College.
He and his wife the former
Katherine Ott of Flatbush,
Brooklyn the parents of Walter
Jr., Michael, Timothy and Kathy,
plan to travel extensively while
still maintaining a home at
Broadway, Bethpage.
In a recent rornmentary Chief
Looney reflected with pride and
satisfaction on his association,
with the Officers and Members of
the Nassau County Police,
summing as he did his feelings
about his entire Career by stating
"Iflhaditallovertodo.Iwoulddo
it again."
A dinner in his honor will be
held on April 5, 1979 at the Crest
Hollow Country Club, Jericho
Turnpike, Woodbury,
SUZANNE SZESCILA (third from left), OF BETHPAGE was one of
three Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism students
who received a scholarship from the Newswomen's Club of New
York. Szescila accepted the prize during the club's annual
Newswomen's Ball and awards ceremony held recently at the
Biltmore Hotel in New York. Also attending were (from the left):
Eileen Canzian and Lisa Interollo, the other two scholarship winners;
Joan O'Sullivan, syndicated columnist for King Features
Syndicate and Newswomen's Club vice president; Celeste Holm,
Broadway and movie star; and Jean Dalmath, director of public
relations for Sarah Conventry jjewelry^tbe corporate host for the
scholarship winners at the Biltmore festivities.
