State Champs Led by Bethpager
Danny Gold, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Gould, 26610th Street,
Bethpage, was a member of the
Town of Oyster Bay Peewee

York State Championship in
Rome, N.Y. the weekend of
March 21,22,23.
Danny played a right wing on
the powerful Oyster Bay squad
which averaged 8 goals per game

Oyster Bay defeated the host
team in the championship final,
3-0, after posting decisive wins
over Amherst 6-0; Massena 8-1;
Syracuse 11-1 and Troy (in the
semi-final contest) 10-1. The
team, which boasts a season
record of 55 wins, 1 loss and 4 ties,
will now travel to Detroit,
Michigan, to compete in the National
Tournament the weekend
of April 11.
In the two years this team
played together, it has won 124,
A GOOD LISTENER -- Some 100 visually handicapped and blind
youngsters, such as ten year old Anne Mauro of Bethpage, enjoyed
a traditional Easter egg hunt with some help from special "chirping"
eggs and the Telephone Pioneers of America clown trpupe.
The Pioneers, a community service group of New York Telephone
employees, designed the unique units just for the occasion which
was held at the Burrwood Home for the Blind in Cold Spring Harbor.
lost 2 and tied 8. Two years ago,
as Squirts (ages 9 and 10), this
team also won the State Championship,
the first time a Long Island
team has ever done so.
The Town of Oyster Bay Ice
Hockey League is sponsored by
the Town's Department of Parks.
The ice hockey program, which
was founded in 1966, is the largest
of its kind on Long Island. The
teams play on the Town's three
ice rinks located in the Bethpage,
Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-
Woodbury Community parks.
Firemen's Park
Opens April 19
Oyster Bay Town Councilman
Salvatore R. Mosca announced
that the Town will dedicate a
park in Bethpage to the community
volunteer firemen, and
unveil a stone monument
honoring two Bethpage firemen
who gave their lives in the performance
of their duty.
The park, located on Powell
Avenue behind the Bethpage
Library, will be officially
dedicated the Bethpage
Firemen's Memorial Park at
ceremonies beginning at 10 AM,
Saturday, April 19,1980.
At that time a stone monument
will also be unveiled, inscribed
with the names of Captain Joseph
Dunn and Fireman Robert
Hassett who were killed on May
25,1978, while fighting a fire at a
retail swimming pool outlet in
Bethpage.
Saturday Is Clean-Up Day
Some of the children in the
above photo probably have
children of their own. The shot
was taken in 1967 during a very
successful Bethpage clean-up
drive.
This Saturday over 100
youngsters will meet at the
Police Boys .Club parking lot on.
Stewart Avenue, move out at 9
A.M. to designated locations and
begin cleaning up the town. It
takes considerably more
youngsters in 1980 than it did in
1967 simply because Bethpage
has more litter now.
The clean-up is a major
operation and we are fortunate to
have the volunteer services of the
following groups: the Political
Activities Club with prexy
Jeanne Candiotte; Robert
Anderson and his Boy Scouts;
Susan Dunn and the Girl Scouts
and Mauree Briedenbock and her
4H boys and girls.
To help ease the chore
somewhat, the Town of Oyster
Bay will sweep Broadway and
Stewart Avenue on Thursday and
Friday.
After the clean-up, the
Woman's Club is planning to
plant new flowers in the tubs
along Broadway,
More help is needed and a
phone call to 935-1195 after five
any evening will line you up for
your assistance. Residents are
urged to cooperate by cleaning up
their own immediate areas and
offering voluntary transportation.
All filled bags and or other
debris may be brought to the
P.B.C. parking lot and deposited
into a roll-off dumpster supplied
by the Highway Dept. of Oyster
Bay Town
The project should be completed
by 11 or 12 Noon at the
latest — when all participants
will meet at the parking lot for
refreshments ... sponsored and
supplied by the Rotary Club of
Bethpage. Rain Date: April 26 —
weather permitting!
OUTSTANDING SPORTSMAN: Oyster Bay Town Councilman
Gregory W. Carman [second from left] was on hand at the Tobay
Hockey Awards night to present the trophy for outstanding sport-manship
to Charlie Herel [second from right] of Bethpage Charlie's
parents were present to witness the proud moment.
