Volunteer Firemen /—People In The News
License Plates Coming
Active volunteer firemen will be able to obtain special
distinctive license piates under legislation sponsored by
State Senator Owen H. Johnson (R-C, 4th, S.D.)
Detailing this bill, S 8734-B, Senator Johnson explained that
the special license plates will bear the Maltese Cross, which
is the firefighter's symbol, and the letters, "V.F." These
plates would be issued only to bona fide active members of a
volunteer fire company. A charge will be made for these
special plates at the time they are issued.
"Volunteer firemen spend countless hours protecting our
homes and businesses, and the special license plates are but
one way the state can show its apprciation. In addition,
because some volunteer firemen do not have emergency
lights, the special plates will be a valuable means of
identifying their vehicles when responding to calls," Senator
Johnson commented. The legislation has the support of the
Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY)
and is similar to existing provisions in several ofeh$r states,
including Nejy Jersey an^M^rylarid. &**','
"the Johnson bill passed during the% last hours of the
legislative session and is now on its way to the Governor for
final approval.

Tribune Readers
Can You Help?
Brother, can you spare a - bed. This writer personally met
a 21 year old college student from Madrid University, Spain
who is on an exchange type program. His name is Luis
Manuel Canete and he is presently (til Aug. 4) staying at the
home of the Schiriro family in Farmingdale. Luis has to
leave for New Hampshire August 4 unless some local family
can spare him the room to continue his stay in New York
which he loves. He said he can help with food costs if it's a
problem. Can one of our readers help call the Schiriro's at
249-5692. Let them know and then give us a call too!
P.S. I would have taken Luis myself but with 3 daughters
and a houseguest from Paris it's a bit close quarters.
More than 1,000 people were on hand recently at Colonic Hill,
