People In The News
STRUMMING ALONG: Oyster Bay Town Councilman
Gregory W. Carman strums a few notes on the banjo, loaned
to him by Jack Hultman [center], director of the Long Island
Mummers. The Mummers performed recently at Bethpage
Community Park as part of the Cultural and Performing Arts
ICAPA] summer programs in the park. Also strumming
along is Mummer Harry Nicolls.
Viet Brothers Find Home In Bethpage
Thap and Tuyen Vong have found a new and loving home
for themselves with the Noren family of Central Blvd., Bethpage.
Camille and Stan Noren added to their own four children by
providing a home for two of the many displaced "boat
children" from Viet Nam.
The brothers have been with the Noren family since
November, 1979 and were able to fit right in with the Bethpage
community in spite of some language barriers. Thap,
16, attends Bethpage High School and Tuyen, 9, is in the 2nd
grade at Central Boulevard. Both boys are awaiting the
arrival of their sister, Quan, who will hopefully be placed
with the Noren family. By the way, the little house on Central
Boulevard has a unique feature — Rubber Walls.
Stan Noren is with the N.Y.P.D. and spends his "free" time
upstate building a little cabin in the woods for the family to
vacation at. Hope he has enough stretchable materials.
Camille, besides being mother of six is an active member of
PTA committees and the Shootist Gun Club. She also has
time for sewing lessons.
The boys have a younger brother and sister in Viet Nam,
along with their natural parents. The two oldest of the family
are-in a refugee camp in Malaysia, waiting to come to
America in 1981. They are being sponsored by three sister
churches in Hicksville. The parents have virtually no hope of
ever seeing their family together again, and can only communicate
by sending letters to distant relatives or friends.
The children were brought to America by the Mission of the
Immaculate Virgin in Staten Island. One hundred thirty
more of these uprooted young people will be coming to the
U.S. in October, 1980. Anyone with room in their homes , and
in their hearts, could contact the Mission or the Norens, for
more information.
Pictured, clockwise, starting at 1 o'clock: Thap, 16; Shawn,
10; Tuyen, 9; Stacey, 6; Dawn, 8; Michele, 13. That's Santa in
the middle.

Mosca f left] calls the count as Walter Cody of Massapequa

takes his position. The Councilman was on hand at a
recent game of the Town's senior citizen softball team, the
Tobay Tigers, who proudly sported their new team tee-shirts.

On Thursday, July 10, 1980, at Burns Park, Massapequa,
the 15 year old BETHPAGE BABE RUTH TOURNAMENT
TEAM became the District ft 2 Champions by defeating the
Baldwin Babe Ruth Tournament Team. Ken Ford pitched a
no-hitter and was presented the first Pete Pappas Memorial
Award for the Most Valuable Player in the Tournament
Councilman Greg Carman presented the award to Ken
during a moving ceremony attended by Mrs. Pappas and
family. Pete Pappas, who passed away in January, held
various offices in the regional and national Babe Ruth
organization for more than 20 years and, although he was a
Massapequa resident, he was instrumental in encouraging
Bethpage to become part of the Babe Ruth organization.
On Friday evening, July 18th, the team will be dinner
guests, along with the other District Champions, of the Metro
New York Babe Ruth League at the Embassy Terrace in
Brooklyn and will be awarded trophies at that time.
On Saturday, the Bethpage team will play in the Metro NY
Tournament at Gil Hodges Field in Brooklyn at 3:00 PM. If
possible, come and help root for our local champs!

Local Men Die
In Plane Crash
Peter DeLuca, 53, of Paul Lane, Seaford & Ronald Marino,
31, of Grand St. Massapequa lost their lives last Sunday when
their stunt plane crashed into the sands of Davis Park Beach
on Fire Island. The plane barely missed several hundred
sunbathers out for the weekend. Speculation was the plane
ran out of gas as it did not burn and the tanks appeared to be
empty.
