Bethpage Swim Team Captures
Division One Championship
Division I
The Annual Nassau Co. Swim Conference (NCSC) was hosted this year by Veteran's
Memorial Park of E, Meadow on the evening of August 25th last. This division usually
comprises the six most highly qualified competitive teams from the various Nassau County
Towns and Parks. The Bethpage victory last Monday nite culminated a long and gruelling
march from the Division 2 championship of 1974 to the first place slot this year. Sportsmanship,
courage and a great team effort finally paid off.
Thanks to the superb guidance of head coach Bob Gronbach and his assistants Mary Lou
Rochon, Kevin Mulvaney, Jeff Schaetzel and Jack Mooney, who are all veterans of the
Community Summer Team, the Winter AAU Swim Club and the Bethpage High School
Eagles, our Bethpage team performed brilliantly.
Division Team Scores for the evening: 1st - Bethpage, 206, 2nd - Plainview, -194, 3rd -
Veterans, -192,4th- Wantagh, -181,5th- Babylon, -177,6th- Christopher Morley, - 066.
In individual events in such a contest, every place except last, counts. So each team
member should be congratulated for their own personal contribution to the overall victory.

It is difficult to describe the history of a big win like the Division One championship. Team
swimming was born here with the opening of the Community Park in 1964. Sixteen years ago
many dedicated coaches started to develop, the present interest in community organized
swimming; among them Jin Forbes, Geo. Van Dormolen, Bob Kane, Sue Comerford and
Bob Hartman. Using the high school pool in 1967, a small AAU swim club from Bethpage
families was formed. It provided a • cadre of swimmers • with year round experience for our
high school Eagles and the Summer team. Regular coaching of fine quality is supplied
under the guidance of Bob Forrest and Cheryl Van Sickle. Off season swimming continues in
our facilities which is now AAU associated. The Swim Club is. interested in providing family
participation in a great sport. The swimming world offers an alternative providing gainful
involvement of our youth, especially as compared to the devastating damage of drugs and
alcohol', parents of destructive vandalism and violence. Parents and young people interested
please call Mrs. Carol Sirey at 735-9151 or Mrs. Mary McCutcheon a1681-5805.
The Summer Swim Season ended in a gala victory picnic at the Community picnic area on
