Prevent Burglaries
"Help us to helpVoii," was the theme of the message being
sent by Nassau County Police Commissioner Samuel J. Rozzi
to various community leaders throughout the county to help
deal with the increase in residential burglaries.
"The department has limited manpower and resources,"
stated Rozzi. "We are taking aggressive action with our
Burglary Task Force but we need community support. In
one-third of the burglaries committed in Nassau County,
entrance was gained through an unlocked door or window.
This we cannot allow. The public must be educated to protect
themselves from being victims of crime," continued Rozzi.
Rozzi's appeal to the community comes one week after his
announcement of the establishment of a Burglary Task
Force comprised of existing crime prevention units to deal
with a 54 percent increase in residential burglaries. The units
comprised of over thirty cars will be concentrating en masse
in select areas of the county which have experienced
residential burglaries.
In the next few weeks letters will be forwarded to PTA
groups, service and fraternal organizations and houses of
worship offering a burglary protection program given by the
Police Department's Crime Resistance Unit. The one hour
lecture which includes the film, "The Hue and Cry," focuses
on relatively inexpensive methods residents can take to
safeguard their homes, business and personal property. In
addition, it explains the proper use of the 911 emergency
communications system.
"We can be successful in stemming the tide of residential
burglaries," stated Rozzi. "We cannot do it alone....There
must be a partnership between the police and the
community."
Organizations interested in scheduling a program should
send a letter to the Office of Commissioner of Police, 1490
Franklin Avenue, New York 11501. Further information can
be obtained by calling the Crime Resistance Unit at 535-5126.
Councilman King
Named Hibernian
Of The Year
Hempstead Councilman Peter T. King has been selected as
"Hibernian of the Year" by the Monsignor Michael J.
JVIcLoughlin Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in
Nassau County.
King, who is Chairman of the Freedom For All Ireland
Committee of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Div. No. 7,
and a member of the American Irish Congress and the Irish
National Caucus, will be honored at the Annual Dinner of the
Pro-Life Committee of the Nassau County Ancient Order of
Hibernians. The Dinner will be held at the St. Frances De
Chantel Church Auditorium in Wantagh on October 17th.
Councilman King will be presented the Hibernian award by
Nassau District Attorney Denis Dillon who was last year's
recipient.
Councilman King has long been active in the struggle for
human rights in Northern Ireland. In August 1979 he was
cited for his efforts by Representative Mario Biaggi who
stated in the Congress that "Councilman King is to be
commended for his efforts in making the administration ever
aware that the human rights violations in Ireland at the
hands of the British must cease. Our efforts to advance the
cause of peace and justice can only be intensified with the
continued help and support of dedicated people such as Peter
King."
In January 1980 Councilman King conducted a fact-finding
tour of Ireland during which he met with a number of
governmental officials including representatives of the Irish
Foreign Affairs Department. Following his tour, King issued
a report calling for an increased American role in ending
human rights violations in Northern Ireland and bringing
about the reunification of all Ireland. Councilman Kings
report was submitted into the Congressional Record by
Congressman Norman F. Lent who stated: "I find Mr. King's
report a major contribution to a better understanding of the
difficult problems in Northern Ireland and to a clearer
perception of the assistance the United States might provide
in ending them."
