Joan Grossman - In Memorium
Bethpage lost one of its finest math teachers-Joan Grossman, who
died on February 18, 1981.
Mrs. Grossman set high standards for herself and her students. She
was unrelenting in her pursuit of excellence, aware of every students'
strengths and weaknesses and assisted them in developing their full
potential; something achieved through hard work only. Joan spent
many hours outside the classroom correcting papers and maintaining
meticulous records tracking each students' progress.
A pleasant woman with a marvelous sense of humor, she was regarded
by her colleagues with genuine respect; her students loved her.
Mrs. Grossman was the kind of teacher who leaves a special imprint
on her students.
You will be greatly missed, Joan Grossman. We are grateful for the
20 years you devoted to our children.
A Parent Who Knew Her
The John F.. Kennedy Junior High School faculty and students
observed a moment of silence in tribute to Mrs. Grossman on Monday,
February 23, 1981.
The flag was lowered to half-mast for the purpose of honoring one of
our most cherished and respected faculty members, Joan Grossman.

Highlights Big
Brothers/Sisters Month
Big Brothers / Sisters has launched an all-out
recruitment effort aimed at reaching more
volunteers to meet the needs of children in our
community. The event, called "The Battle Of
The Villages", is a challenge to all Nassau
communities to recruit as many volunteers as
they can. The goal of 100 volunteers in February
has been set. Thus far, the top three leaders are
the villages of Hempstead, Massapequa Park
and Great Neck Plaza.
A highlight of the month will be a Big Brothers
/ Sisters Day at Levittown Roller Rink. AH
"Littles" will be admitted free of charge. The
public is invited to meet many of the program
participants and to learn more about the agency.
For nearly eight decades, Big Brothers
/ Sisters has been concerned with helping
single parent kids make it in life. Friendship,
understanding and a sense of self-worth are the
gains of the child. For a Big Brother or Sister,
the reward is in knowing they have given a kid a
chance.
Most volunteers believe that they receive more
benefits from the relationship than they give,
and that the knowledge that they are needed
makes the experience most valuable to them.
During the coming weeks, county Executive
Pur cell, joined by majors from all over Nassau,
will be asking men and women if they can't spare
a little time each week to make 1981 better for a
youngster. The number to call is 489-7440 for
more information. Call now and help your village
win the "Battle."
Nassau County joins communities across the country in recognition of the important role a Big
Brother or Sister plays in a young person's life.

Sisters Director Bill Tymann, Little Brother Darryl Bowens of Hempstead and Little Sister Melanie
Jackson of Island Park.
