Bethpage Baltera Brothers
Score Big In Villanova Swim
SPECIAL TO THE BETHPAGE TRIBUNE
Brothers, Bob and Bruce Baltera, both graduates of Bethpage High School (Bethpage, N.Y.), are making quite a
successful splash at Villanova University as members of the varsity swim team. Villanova finished the dual meet season*
owning a 104 record, its best in five seasons, and later added to the successful season by capturing first place in the
Big East Conference Championships.
A major reason for the Wildcats top finish in the Big East
meet, which was held February 19-21 at the University of
Connecticut, Storrs, Conn., was the swimming of the two
Balteras.
Bob, a senior and co-captain of the Wildcat squad, put on an
impressive display in the Big East meet. Capturing second in
the 100-yard freestyle, Bob went on to add a third place finish
in the 50-yard freestyle and a fifth in the 200-yard freestyle.
He was also a member on both the 400 and 800-yard freestyle
relays which captured top finishes.
Bruce, a sophomore and the younger of the two, did equally
welFfh the Big East meet. Snagging a second in the 200-yard
butterfly, Bruce went on to grab a third irt the 100-yard
butterfly and a fifth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Both swimmers have racked up impressive honors in both
high school and college. Bob was selected Villanova's most
valuable swimmer by his teammates last season, and while
in high school was named the most valuable Nassau County
swimmer, as well as Bethpage High School's MVP three
times (1975, 76, 77), and Bethpage's Golden Eagle Award
recipient.
Bruce has been equally honored. Elected Villanova's
Unsung Hero award by his collegiate teammates last season,
Bruce has also been named Villanova's "Budweiser Athlete
of the Week". A four-letter winner in swimming at Bethpage,
Bruce received the Most Valuable Swimmer and Golden
Eagle awards in high school, and was also selected to receive
the Kiwanis Club Athlete Award.
Bob, in addition to being an outstanding swimmer, is also
an outstanding student having compiled a 3.9 cumulative
grade point average on a 4.0 scale. A biology major, Bob has
decided to go on to medical school and become a doctor.
Bruce is an accounting major at Villanova. Bob and Bruce
are the sons of Ramon and Theresa Baltera of Old Bethpage,
New York.
