Thomas Scott, today announced the arrests and
indictments of more than 40 individuals as a
result of an undercover investigation. The probe,
known as Operation B.U.S.T. (Burglary
Undercover Sting Task-Force), was conducted
by the three agencies over the last eleven weeks,
and was aimed at netting burglars in Nassau
County.
According to Dillon, "The operation was run
out of a gold and silver store at 107 Jackson
Street in Hempstead. The store, known as C & C
Gold and Silver was .staffed by undercover
.personnel and was equipped with hidden
videotape equipment. All transactions were
recorded, and numerous pieces of property
which were purchased were stolen in burglaries,
robberies and shoplifting."
Most of the larcenies that were solved as a
result of the undercover operation occurred in
the Village of Hempstead and surrounding
communities, such as West Hempstead,
Uniondale, Freeport, East Meadow and Garden
City. Much of the property recovered was gold
and silver, but also included guns, credit cards,
cameras, trophies, office equipment, religious
articles, fur coats, calculators, stereos and a
grand-father clock.
The gold and silver store was staffed by
undercover people for six weeks. Thousands of
pieces of stolen property were recovered at a
small fraction of their value. The District
Attorney's office funded the operation and paid
out $4,800. Experts saw that in most cases the
property was purchased for less than 10 percent
of its true value.
The investigation is continuing as the Police
Department is still trying to identify much of the
recovered property. In addition, police are
continuing to arrest defendants in the cases
where property identification has been made.
Dillon, Rozzi and Scott said they would
continue to use undercover operations to combat
the problem of burglaries. Dillon said his office
would continue its tough posture in such cases,
and would hope that Judges continue their strong
positions on sentences.
The DA noted that several of the defendants
arrested in the string operation are juveniles and
would be prosecuted in the Family Court. The
names of those under 16 who were taken into
custody are confidential. The names of the other
defendants will be released as they are taken
into custody.
Special credit should be given to those
individuals who supervised the string operation
for the three agencies. For the District
Attorney's office, they are Lawrence Leff,
Executive Assistant District Attorney for
Operations; John McKenna, Chief of the Felony
Screening Bureau; and Philip Grella, Deputy
Chief of the County Court Bureau. For the
Nassau Police Department, Inspector Donald
Kane and Sergeant Gary Repetti headed the
operation. For the Village of Hempstead Police
Department, Lt. John Pagano was in charge.
