A typical day in the job of a lifeguard can be rewarding and present
challenging situations. For the 22 lifeguards of the Bethpage Community
Pool, it is usually a day full of hectic activity and hot sun. A few of our
young lifeguards openly reflect on their jobs this summer.
Joanne Mosca, captain of the lifeguard, squad, stated that the job is
harder than most people seem to realize. "We're in the sun all day and
we're very tired by evening. Many people seem to think that our job
involves sunbathing all day long—and it's not so!", stated Miss Mosca. In
fact, lifeguards handle a wide range of responsibilities. Pool maintenance
is one such activity, involving gardening and sweeping of the surrounding
areas. They are also responsible for cleaning and vacuuming the pool.
Swimming lessons are taught each morning for children. A new program
is in the works for the swimming instruction of two to four year olds, known
as the "Tiny Tots". The class begins on July 20th and 24th, and registration
for these lessons is going on now.
The lifeguards are responsible for all swimming classes. After
instructions, they get ready for the rest of their day which has the general
structure of V2 hour sitting time (up on the high stations) and V2 hour down.
The Vz hour down does not mean rest. It means 15 minutes of foot patrol
around the three pools and 15 minutes for general duties. The only real
break away from the water is lunch or dinner. '
During foot patrol, one of their duties is to remind pool users of the rules
and regulations. No eating in the pool areas and no diaper changing at the
kiddie pool are probably the biggest offenders. These rules were made by
the Town and the Board of Health, not the lifeguards. They are for the
protection of all who use the pool facilities and obeying them voluntarily
would help the lifeguards with an already difficult job. Maureen Schenk, a
lieutenant for the lifeguard squad, claims that residents must cooperate
with them to ensure that all the safety regulations are met.
Parents seem generally pleased and commented on the satisfactory
accomplishments of the lifeguards. Bonnie Schultz, a resident of Bethpage
feels that the lifeguards maintain a strict discipline to the regulations they
must follow. With three children of her own, Mrs. Schultz stated that the
pool is clean and had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. A kiddy patrol is
always present when the pool becomes crowded.
Lifeguards are certified by the Board of Health and must be alert to
handle any arising emergency. Many of these lifeguards are college
students and must be at least 17 to apply for a position. A W.S.I, course
(Water Safety Instruction) is mandatory and must be renewed each year.
Other requirements include having the ability to administer general first
aid and C.P.R.
