Bethpage Fire Department
Holds Annual Picnic
Engine Company HI, The hosts of this year's picnic.
The Burger King cups get put to good use by [1 to r] Pat
McDonnell, John Castles and friends.
A Bocci Ball game gets under way between [1 to r] Clif
Rcichart, John McCabe, Tom Reed and Lou Levien.
The Bethpage Fire Department's Annual
Picnic, hosted this year by Co. 1, was a great
success.
The picnic was held at the Grumman Picnic
facility which is donated to the BFD by
Grumman every year as a courtesy. It offers a
huge cooking island under a roof, a playground
for the children, a softball field, schuffle board,
putt putt golf and bocci ball courts. There is also
a canopied dance floor which was put to good use
all day to the music of The Martin Brothers Band
from Jabby's Tavern. Wandering through the
crowd of over 400 people, were a group of Clowns
from the L.I. Clown Association, entertaining
everyone with their antics and supplying the kids
with all kinds of balloon animals. A mystifying
magician was also on hand to baffle everyone
with his tricks.
Co. 1, under the direction of Capt. Steve
Maffetone, spent many hours preparing for the
picnic long before Sunday rolled around. There is
a lot of running around to do in obtaining enough
food and beverage for that many people. The day
before the picnic, about 20 ablebodied firemen
sat around peeling and slicing 100 pounds of
onions and 8 crates of peppers so that all could
enjoy sausage and pepper heros and sliced
onions for the hamburgers.
The rest of the menu consisted of hot dogs,
corn, clams, watermellon and ice cream. Soda
and beer was enjoyed out of paper cups donated
by our local Burger King. All this food was
prepared, cooked and served by the men, each
company taking an hour's turn at the grill. This
year the ladies auxiliary offered their help by
volunteering to take the last hour of the day on
the grill so the boys could enjoy themselves. That
offer was greatly appreciated girls, as well as all
the support you give the men throughout the
year.
The afternoon was taken up with many games
all over the field. There was a volleyball game
between the boys and the girls. Then two softball
games, one between companies 4 and 3 and one
between companies 2 and 1. Somehow, there
were no scores reported for any of these games.
We'd like to hear about the outcome of these
great sports events fellas; and what happened to
the annual Tug of War?
With all this fun, games, and eating going on,
who was protecting our district??? Why, the men
of the Bethpage Fire Department, of course. A
few times during the festivities the fire whistle
blew and the assigned firemen dropped whatever
they were doing (or eating), ran to the
trucks and took off to attend their primary
function, protecting us.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Colby [second from
right] relishes a hotdog and a chat at the Bethpage Fire
Department's annual picnic. Enjoying the festivities along
with Town Councilman Salvatore R. Mosca [third from left]
are [left to right] Frank Ernst, 2nd deputy chief; Michael
Croan, 1st deputy chief; Al Castaldi, chief; and Steve
Maffetone, captain of Engine Co. #1 and picnic chairman.
The much appreciated Ladies Auxiliary helping out by
taking a turn at the grill.
Members of the L.I. Clown Association
everyone by just clowning around.
