Bethpage Awaits New Supermarket
and Shopping Center
Interviews by Diana Pendas

Mr. Barry Feldman of Bethpage Plaza
Associates has announced plans to fully renovate
and update the shopping center on Stewart
Avenue.
The main attraction will be an all new and
modern King Kullen supermarket Bethpage has
long been in need of a good local supermarket.
How many times have we seen our Seniors
boarding a bus to do food shopping; or our
children biking across busy Hempstead Tpke. to
pick up a few things for mom.
These trips will no longer be necessary as Mr.
Bernard Kennedy, Sr. Vice President of
Company Operations at King Kullen has assured
us that our new supermarket will carry a full line
of groceries, including the recently popular
Generics (or no-name brands), a personal
service deli counter and a fresh produce
department, where you can pick from loose
rather than pre-packaged fruits and vegetables.
Besides the new supermarket, the shopping
center is going to get a face lift, according to Mr.
Feldman. A whole new facade with new, uniform
business signs will spruce up the overall scene.
The parking facilities will be increased by
removing the unnecessary middle island; then
repaving and repainting the lines. Overhead
lights will be replaced with new high intensity
sodium lamps. This means that after dark, the
area will be well lit with no "dark corners". We
can expect to see some lovely flowers and
greenery, as part of the general plan includes
some landscaping and planters.
This is a huge endeavor, of course, but both
Mr. Feldman and Mr. Kennedy have assured us
that we should be able to see the end result by
late fall of this year.
The town of Bethpage anxiously awaits the
Grand Opening of their new supermarket along
with the completed renovations to the shopping
center. Here you will see some of the residents of
our community giving their comments. Seniors
are pleased that they will have convenient
shopping again and most of the shop owners feel
that the coming improvements and the new store
will give a boost, rather than competition, to
their businesses. The question asked was:
"HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE NEW KING
KULLEN COMING TO THE STEWART AVE.
SHOPPING CENTER IN BETHPAGE?
Anne Heuschneider states she likes the idea of a grocery
store near her home.
Sal and Dolly Galante, owners of THE FRUIT BASKET in Mr. William Archimede claims, "It's about time we had a
the Stewart Ave. center are delighted to have a market in the food store—and I feel we should have more in the
vicinity of their home. community."
Bob Harrison, who works in Bethpage, also feels that a
supermarket would alleviate the problem of food shopping in
another town. "Now people around the area can shop in
Bethpage rather than traveling elsewhere for food", claimed
Mr. Harrison.
Mrs. Florence Pipitone, an employee for Capri Cleaners on
Stewart Ave. claims that such a store draws people into the
shopping center, thus promoting business to grow. "A
Supermarket such as King Kullen would be convenient for
the residents of the Bethpage community", states Mrs.
Pipitone.
Benjamin Eddington, a member of a senior citizen center he
helped establish in 1972 states he is "tickled to death" of a
market only a block away from his home. The eighty-six year
old man is delighted at the convenience of it's location. In a
short time, Mr. Eddington will be freed from the hassles of
walking to another town to do the food shopping.
