Questions and Answers for Bethpage
Barry Feldman, of PMA Associates, addressed a group of over 40
Bethpage residents at the Bethpage Public Library in a meeting
sponsored by the newly formed Bethpage Citizens Alliance, a community
organization. Also present was Mr. George Steinmetz of. King Kullen
Supermarkets. A King Kullen is planned to be the community
supermarket.
Mr. Feldman has been in the real estate business for more than ten
years and has had part in opening twenty shopping centers across Long
Island. He gave his assurance to the small shop owners at the Stewart
Avenue center that the opening of the new King Kullen, along with
renovation of the existing center, would benefit all concerned, drawing
more people into the area, therefore, promoting an increase in business.
The audience eagerly asked questions regarding plans for the shopping
center and obtained pledges for a variety of improvements. Mr.* Feldman
pledged to the residents present at the meeting to make the following
improvements: to create a new facade for the storefronts, to redesign the
parking field and repair sidewalks, to improve lighting, to have proper
maintenance including snow and ice removal, to add benches and
planters to the area and to provide a regular maintenance man who will
be on duty five or six days a week to insure that the center looks its best.
The question of increased rents was raised by some of the storeowners
present. Through research, it was shown that the new rates are on a level
with or lower than surrounding shopping centers.
Residents expressed concern about the new supermarket folding as its
predessors did. Thus leaving the shopping center empty again. The
information received in answer is that King Kullen is a Long Island
supermarket chain, unlike the two previous stores in this spot. As a local
chain, they will have competitive prices rather than fixed price items.
King Kullen thrives on the direct needs of the Long Island community.
Mr. Steinmetz feels secure that the new King Kullen on Stewart Avenue
will be a success.
"The meeting was beneficial to all concerned because Mr. Feldman's
comments were encouraging," stated Bethpage Citizens Alliance

Mr. Feldman told the Bethpage residents that he would be happy to
answer any questions that community people might have. He also offered

activities. Arrangements can be made with him personally by calling his
office, 931-4700. This is also the number to use for any inquires or
comments Bethpage residents might have for the developer.
The Bethpage Citizens Alliance is a membership organization and is
one of 16 Long Island chapters of the statewide organization involved in
issues including utility rates, clean drinking water, and community
improvement. The next meeting will be in September, time and date to be
announced.
