First Day of School
The first day of school at St. Martin of Tours
Schoolcomes to an end. Mrs. Dorothy Sharkey, a
teacher there, said "It was a good day with little
confusion." New students had no trouble
conforming to rules and regulations and returning
students already know the rules.
John Sabino of Bethpage is a man of few words.
When asked, "How was school today?", his only
comment was "Oh, it was O.K."
Walkers from St. Martins file out the front door,
under Mrs. Maguire's watchful eye, to meet
waiting mothers and little brothers and sisters
who didn't have to go to school.
The bus riders are directed to the right bus by
the monitors, who kept repeating, "in an orderly
fashion, please." Mrs. Rego [left] makes sure
they do their job.
Illegal Fraternity Hazing in Nassau Goes Unreported
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon
today released a report into illegal fraternity
hazing that has "become common practice at the
S.U.N.Y. College at Old Westbury." Among
other things the report cites the practice of
branding students with the fraternity insignia as
part of the hazing activity.
According to Dillon, "The investigation by the
Official Corruption Bureau is aimed at exposing
the illegal and dangerous fraternity hazing in the
County and to present appropriate ways to stop
the current activity. Three such recommendations
are outlined in this final report."
The report states that fraternities Omega Psi
Phi and Phi Beta Sigma at Old Westbury have
been involved in "violent, and sometimes
Sadistic, hazing activity as initiation requirements
into their respective fraternal organizations."
In addition to branding pledges by heating
a wire coat hanger and pressing it against the
arm of a student, the report cites incidents of both
physical and mental abuse.
Dillon said the investigation revealed the
beating of pledging students with wire hangers
and fists. In addition, students were forced to eat
dog food, drink a mixture of oil and water as a
laxative, shave their heads incessant running,
and forbidden to wash themselves for a
continuous month.
The District Attorney said the administration
at the college failed to adhere to S.U.N.Y. Rules
and Regulations on hazing even after the
violation became known to them. The report
concluded that, "The District Attorney's investigation
has uncovered a systematic course of
conduct at the S.U.N.Y. College at Old Westbury
which accepts and even condones the illegal and
harmful ritual of fraternity hazing. The college
administration has been fully aware of this
situation and has failed to respond by utilizing
pre-establishment guidelines in the S.U.N.Y.
Rules and Regulations."
Dillon said the report made the three following
recommendations:
1- The College Administration at Old Westbury
should immediately implement the S.U.N.Y.
Rules and Regulations pertaining to hazing and
begin strict enforcement of those rules.
2- The State Education Department in Albany
should conduct an inquiry into this matter to
insist upon closer school supervision of fraternities
and to correct future deviations from the
Rules and Regulations of the S.U.N.Y. system.
3- In the past, the District Attorney's Office has
sought to adapt the New York State Penal Law to
the severity of hazing practices. New legislation
will be introduced to allow the District Attorney's
Office to seek appropraite criminal
prosecution of school hazing violators.
Copies of the report are being sent to S.U.N.Y.
officials in Albany, the administration of
S.U.N.Y. College at Old Westbury, and Assemblyman
and Senators in Albany.
