LTV Drops Takeover Plans
Grumman employees got the official word early this week over the
public address system. "We have just received word from Dallas that
LTV has withdrawn their tender offer for Grumman stock," announced
George Skurla, chairman and president of the Grumman Aerospace
Corp. subsidiary. "We can be proud of the way the Grumman family
team has stood together."
Skurla's announcement brought a resounding cheer from Grumman
employees in the shops, offices and assembly areas. It marked the end of
two months of struggle by Grumman management, personnel and Long
Islanders in general to hold back the LTV Corp. Now that the fight is won,
it seems less possible that similar efforts by other companies willbe
attempted, but Grumman will not let it's guard down easily.
As he closed out takeover plans, LTV chairman Paul Thayer said "We
have done a good job and have gone as far as we should go." and the
shouting will take place Thursday afternoon as Grumman employees and
supporters gather together one more time, for a Grumman Victory
Celebration.
Royal Welcome
This is Mr. Paul Vetter, your store manager. He will be pleased to help
you in any way in order to facilitate your shopping.

Bethpage's new and beautiful supermarket opened its doors on Tuesday
morning and it was hard to tell who was smiling more, the anxious
customers or the King Kullen personnel. Everyone concerned with this
grand opening is really pleased at the final result of months of work and
planning. A walk through the various departments show a large selection
of merchandise to choose from. One shopper, when asked her opinion of
the store said, "This is great, I can get everything I need right here, no
more traveling around." That about says it all for most of the residents
here who have been driving far and wide to pick up their daily needs.
The cheers of Grumman employees in Bethpage could be heard loud and
clear in all plants as they received word that LTV had dropped its takeover
attempt.
Boating Mishap in
Weekend Storm
The storm that gave us such bad weather on Sunday and Monday of this
week, was also the cause of desperate trouble to Bruce Brownstein of
Bethpage and Jean Ditolla of Plainview. The couple was sailing their 37
foot sloop "Cybil" along the southern Atlantic coast, when the craft
sprung a leak and started to take on water at a rapid rate. The water
caused a short in the electrical system which prevented Brownstein from
starting the engine, rendering the bildge pump useless.
Although they were sailing in the company of 12 other boats at the time,
none of them could come to their aid since they were having their own
problems in the midst of the storm. The pair watched helplessly as two
other boats went down.
Noticing a large vessel about 20 miles in the distance, Brownstein
radioed for help. It turned out to be a navy vessel, which did indeed come
to his aid. The crew spent three hours trying to repair the sloop, but to no
avail. They then tried to tow it, but couldn't because of the great intake of
water weighing the sloop down.
The Navy packed the soaked and exhausted couple on their vessel,
made them warm and comfortable and took them in to the nearest port.
At the time of this report, they are safely in their homes, sadly recounting
their lose.
Their Thanksgiving Holiday will be thankful indeed, since in other
incidents four persons died and six are missing after fierce winds and
high seas lashed parts of the lower East Coast. The storm caused flooding
and beach erosion from Virginia to Florida.
