Charles Campagne-Octogenar ian
Felices of Patchogue was the scene of a beautiful 80th
birthday party on March 22nd for community leader Charles
Campagne. Charlie, as he is known, was surrounded by 140
guests, all friends and relatives of this warm and friendly
man. Charlie, who was born on March 18, 1901, was right at
the front door to greet each and every one of his guests as
they arrived.
All assembled for the cocktail hour, where everyone got a
chance to say hello to everyone else and the phase "I haven't
seen you in years" was heard over and over again. Pictures
were exchanged and notes compared as old friends met old
friends and Charlie smiled and beamed at everyone.
After cocktails, everyone went to a buffet dinner presided
over by Charlie and his wife, Loraine. All joined in a
champagne toast to Charlie, made by Mr. Karl Hupprich, a
retired music teacher from Bethpage High School and long
time friend of the Campagnes. There were quite a few
Bethpage faculty members at this party. All became friends
of Charlie as he served over 20 years on the School Board,
finally giving his name to one of our schools.
The gift table was piled high with tokens of love and
affection from all of his friends and family. Charlie must
have needed two of his own trucks just to get that stuff home.
Dancing and partying went on to some very good music.
Everything from Disco to Big Band sounds was heard and
enjoyed by all. Happy Birthday was sung loud and clear. And
a very Happy Birthday it was. You could see happiness all
over the room as Charles went from table to table to visit
with every friend there, just as he has always done for years
and years. A few words with Charlie over a cup of coffee
always made everyone feel good. Charlie could make all of
your problems smaller and all of your joys bigger. He shared
in both equally.
Born in Italy, Charlie came to Bethpage, then known as
Central Park, from Port Washington with his parents and
two brothers when he was 11 years old. At that time they lived
on Railroad Avenue near the Grumman's Plant Number l
and Charlie attended the old Powell Avenue School.
While growing up he held a variety of jobs which eventually
lead to his employment in 1936 as a deliveryman for Railway
Express. This later lead to a contract with Grumman Aircraft
to do their trucking, a job that he held until his retirement.
Charlie's involvmeiit in community activities began with
the community picnics held by the Italian-American Repub-
